[Annoying] Fellow technicians (coworkers, specifically) that don't pull their weight

What do you guys do concerning techs you work with that slack off, are incompetent, or literally do nothing? We have a tech that basically online shops all day and when he does get around to actually working on a machine, he is completely useless. I mean he'll be "working" on a machine for days, sometimes weeks and then he'll call in sick or something one day and I'll take the machine and have if fixed or at least diagnosed in a matter of minutes. Am I the only person on this forum who has to deal with this type of situation?

We had a guy like that a few years back. What finally did him in were customers calling to complain. It was a school district, and this particular technician was given the nickname "Spongebob Slowpants". He became known throughout the district by this monicker and customers would request that he not be sent anymore.
Here are some other things to try:
-tell him he sucks. This is best done with co-workers while drinking after work. Have them tell him he sucks too.
-give him a slightly hurtful nickname. Lead-Ass, Speedy, etc...This will do one of two things, motivate him to lose the nickname, or motivate him to leave.
-change the path for his web browser to shut down the computer when opened. I use this often and it is very fun to watch as it happens.
-move him into sales. Sounds like he's half way there anyway.

Sounds like a typical UNION guy.

Hey! Can I get a job there too?

I generally ignore them and ensure they don't get much opportunity to lean on me. I like it when the proverbial 'shit has hit the fan' due to their incompetence, sloth, or what ever broken headedness they suffer from and the boss sends me in to save the day. If the boss is actually minding the business these people usually end up moving off elsewhere, voluntarily or otherwise, eventually.

What makes it worse is that this is an in-house gig, so there are no customers to complain, really. The guy was actually transferred from another department (because he was incompetent there as well). It's kind of a unique situation, I guess. We complain about him all the time, but let's just say it's kinda hard to get fired from this gig. Complaining to him directly is not an option because then you get sucked into an elaborate sob story that probably doesn't have much basis in reality. Oh, and did I mention the guy show serious signs of mental illness? Riding him isn't an option either because then I would have to spend my tax refund on a kevlar vest in case this guy loses it one day. He also talks to himself a lot. He's a lot like Milton from Office Space, actually...

I'm not really expecting anyone to help, I guess I'm just venting...

Unfortunately there's no sales department here. Besides, he would scare the shit out of customers...

Sales....Sell,Sell.Sell The fastest way to rid your shop of it. If the tactics Majorolla recomends don't work assign it a specific machine for it to be the main tech for and then you can hold it accountable(Fire) for that. I hold it accountable by doing follow up inspections of the work performed, Customer complaints are the death nail.

We had a theme song for our dufus. Whenever he did something particularly stupid, or just couldn't explain what he was thinking (maybe because there just wasn't any thinking) we'd all start humming the tune from The Wizard Of Oz, when they get to the part about the scarecrow: If I only had a brain ...

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

We used to whistle it out loud anytime someone made a stupid mistake.

I say cut him off from any help. Be it information, lifting, searching, or just anything he can claim as his own work.
I got rid of a salesscum this way. We refused to do any research, moving, training or installs. We were all too busy and didn't have time to help him.
                        He quit 3 days later.
I say make his job miserable and he will leave on his own or he will screw up so bad he gets fired.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Unless you're in management the things Mojorolla mentioned are about the only thing you can do. I just ignore them and tell clients who dislike him to call and report it to management. Eventually, someone up top will get the message and get rid of them.

The nicknames don't always work. We had a guy I used to call "Sunshine" because he acted like he was waiting for a little ray of sunshine from heaven to help him find the answer. He couldn't troubleshoot worth a darn, but he was friendly and likeable. When I called him "Sunshine" everyone else in the office got it and laughed except him. He thought I liked him and would follow me around when I was in the office. He would also eat other people's lunches in the fridge and flush the evidence. (girls in the front were really steamed about it.) The men's room got backed up several times. Plastic forks and other such evidence came up. The guys were a lot rougher with him because of that (I thought it was hilarious), but he would just laugh and think that because they messed with him that they liked him. He was totally surprised when he got fired (due to clients calling in). Do you know he hugged each one of us techs with tears in his eyes, said he'd miss us, and that we were the best friends he ever had! We were glad he left, but it was really quiet for a week after that. Got to us, I guess. Still, some people should never be techs. It wasn't like he was a newbie either. He'd been floating from job to job like that for years.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".
