Why should someone get to make a profit for my existence?

The comment was made in another thread about Obamacare leading to socialism. Sooooooo...Any Americans want to explain how great our for profit health care system is the greatest on earth and all the others countries want to ditch their universal health care for our system.

I am interested in a friendly conversation using facts and figures. I am also interested to hear how abortions caused the holocaust, or the attempted genocide of a race of people, by a political party that had the phrase "God with Us" on uniform buttons.

I'm not sure if you are from the US, and I mean no disrespect to my neighbours to the south. Nor am I comparing them to 1930s Germany, but they seem to put a lot of stock in the belief that God is on their side. I don't believe God cares about specific nations.
Also, being from Canada, there is no way in hell I would trade our health care system for the one in the US. I certainly don't want to have to sell my house just because I was unlucky enough to get sick. It ain't perfect but it is way better than the alternative.

When I dropped my insurance at age 48, my boss was sending the insurance company $650 a month, he was paying half of it. I was told when I turned 50, last August, it would double. That would be about $10,000 to $15000 a year just to go to the doctor. So i have no insurance, I just pay the $100 to $200 out of pocket on the 3 or 4 times a year I go.

Been thinking about dumping ours and just paying cash when we go. Only thing is I'm a heart patient and will probably need it again (insurance) sometime in my life.

I am not sure who feeds you the fairy tales Darren but I know of absolutely no one here who has had to sell their home because they got sick.
That sounds like campaign rhetoric from the people we have been saddled with. That's their version.

Conversely I hear all sorts of tales of people leaving Canada and coming down here for surgery and so forth.

They certainly don't go down there because it is cheaper, if that is what you are inferring. Some of the procedures are approved there that are not approved here. That is the reason. You aren't making up whoppers. Just leaving some things out.

Now you have some GREAT insurance! I pay 3 times that per month for less benefits. I have $3,000 deductible before insurance picks up 80% (I'm still left with 20%) for the next $3,000; then my insurance pays 100%. Also have $40 copay on any visits.

I'm American, the system is broken. I'm self employed and pay $15,000 per year currently with increases looming. I also pay out of pocket co-pays, meds, etc. This overhead drives up prices and hinders hiring new people because the policy goes up with them! The business side of health care or profits is the problem. Many doctors perform unnecessary tests and procedures to fatten their bottom lines. While the Canadian or UK systems are not perfect, they have to be better than this inflated system we have. However, I'm not happy that Washington politicians will exempt themselves from ObamaCare and still keep their private policies! The greedy, self interested DC political scene is the real problem.

A universal health care system is better than an insurance company run system. There are no million dollar corporate bonuses to worry about paying. Yes it comes off your taxes, but, it doesn't cost $10,000 to $15,000 per year as people have been saying on this thread.
You can bet the insurance companies are spreading doom and destruction rumours to scare you into thinking the world will end if a universal health care system is implemented.

Re: Why should someone get to make a profit for my existence?

The right wing in this country are working hard to ensure that every thing that a person needs to exist, has to go through one of their buddies who contribute to keeping them in office. They want the things that protect people who have worked all their lives, to be removed from public ownership, and funnel it through a for profit corporation, like social security and medicaid.

The purpous of a "for profit" company is to make money and a lot of it. The idea of a persons health and possible life being in the hands of a company that wants to pay their ceo's huge bonuses is totally repugnant It is no secret that insurance companies have departments that go over peoples policies to find reasons to drop them before they will pay for expensive procedures.

Blue Cross praised employees who dropped sick policyholders, lawmaker says - Los Angeles Times... here is a quote...An investigation by the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations showed that health insurers WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group and Assurant Inc. canceled the coverage of more than 20,000 people, allowing the companies to avoid paying more than $300 million in medical claims over a five-year period. It also found that policyholders with breast cancer, lymphoma and more than 1,000 other conditions were targeted for rescission and that employees were praised in performance reviews for terminating the policies of customers with expensive illnesses.

This is the health care system the right wing supports.

Health Care Renewal: Insurance Company Employees Got Incentives to Cancel Policies After People Got Sick

How a for profit company works... The overall idea is for me to give them more than they pay out, kind of like a service plan on a copier. However, if the main board goes out on a copier, we replace it. My boss does not send me out to tell the customer that the machine was an inch too close to the wall, and therefore we will be canceling your service policy. I know many people who have paid for insurance on their homes or cars for 20 years and get canceled first time they use it.

In America if you owe the bank money for a house or car, you must keep it insured. If you get dropped and cannot get other coverage, the bank can take your home or car.

Another tale that Americans like to tell is about how everybody from the rest of the world comes here for treatment. Well that is only partly true. You see, when people come here for treatment, the hospital still expects to be paid. Now I am going to assume that average working people like me who live in a place that has government sponscered health care, would not be buying expensive insurance so that they may one day come to America and use it. Sounds silly doesn't it? Their country is not going to pay for it. So this leads me to believe that people who come to America for treatments that cost thousands of dollars are probably very well off and therefore do not relate to this discussion.

I am also aware that if I went to another country and used their hospital, I would be given a large bill.
