    I work with imbeciles!!!

Now, I'm not claiming to be perfect, not by any stretch of the imagination. But this morning I had to attend a help call, left out by someone else as he couldn't fix it. It was a Ricoh SP4100N printer with an SC876 error (HDD fault). He hadn't even tried booting the printer with the HDD disconnected. Why do people like this still have jobs.
Then I got asked by another colleague how to print a configuration sheet (I've lost count of how many times I've told him how to do this).
I regularly get calls asking me how to set up user codes. And most of them haven't a clue how to upgrade firmware.
Sorry, rant over, I just wonder sometimes why I keep on answering my mobile phone (well, actually, when I see certain names I don't LOL)

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Still beats working FOR imbeciles. At least you can ignore another "tech" (for lack of a better word), but it's much harder to ignore the people who sign your paycheck.

Debs, a very wise person recently posted this on FB, Can't remember who. Maybe it works for co-workers too.

If you take props from dopes in the popcorn gallery for things that are probably not on topic, points for being the first person to use the word "imbeciles" that I've seen since I used to watch "The Three Stooges" many years ago.
Still, that stinks. If your phone does email you might try making that your default contact method, and have canned solution responses for the usual suspects. Might not reduce the amount of irritation, but that would hopefully reduce the amount of time you have to deal with it.

                Re: I work with imbeciles!!!

I did two things to help reduce the number of these type of phone calls:

First, I insist that the caller read their own f***ing manual, and try something before calling me.
Second, I assembled a database, so persons willing to search could find a solution themselves.

Still there remained individuals unwilling to do either. You can just ignore those. =^..^=

                  Re: I work with imbeciles!!!

My problem is, I'm just too damned nice. I look at the caller display and know it's going to wind me up, but still I keep answering the calls LOL
I have been known to inform people that, just because I have a good memory for useless information, I shouldn't be used as a shortcut, in fact I think I told them to RTFM
Most of the time I can take it in my stride and help them for the greater good (i.e. keeping customers happy) but every so often it annoys the hell out of me.
And Iowatech, imbecile is a good word that should be used more often

Sadly, a lot of techs are little more than end users who needed a different job. I will never forget a guy we were trying out who was supposed to have been in the business for 12 years. He walked up to me with a page from an HP lj4 with black streaks, and ask me where I thought they came from. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

I still remember warning my niece: "You see how the kitty is limping? It means her hip is hurting, and she's in a really bad mood. I would suggest that you give her a lot of space. She doesn't want to play ... "

A couple of hours later a see a large bandage on the back of her hand, and red teary eyes. "I only wanted to pet her ... " =^..^=

I used to work for a dealer where I ended up being "The Shell Answer Man".
It got to the point where I couldn't get my calls per day done because I was "helping" everyone else, so I started charging those individuals that never helped me.
A buck an answer, a six pack or a bottle of Jack a week.
For some reason they stopped bothering me.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?
