I keep saying to Zackuth here in the shop from time to time we should get an O-scope...not that we'd ever use it...but it was fun to use...we used one several times in AIT when I learned biomedical stuff....but I'm with the rest on the VOM...got a cheap little $20 one from Walmart...does what I need it to do...

      Re: Feel violated here...

      sorry this happened to you.

company provided my tools case laptop ectt..

when i started this job i had a full size chevy silverado with a bed cover on it (that had to be maually locked with a barrel key)

someone walked up in my yard opened the bed cover and stole the tools, my vacumn, and a binder type thing that had test charts in it (included the ridiculosly expensive sharp SIT chart). laptop was locked in the front in the floor board.

insurance wouldnt cover it because the bed cover wasnt locked.

company evaluated the tool set at around 600 bux, which of course i was responsible for. 10 bux a pay check awhile

as far as the meter i dont even know what brand meter i have now, but it works well.

i have a craftsman meter at home that is very nice, temp probes and all that jazz... was less than 200 at sears. would use this for work but it is heavier than the company one.

Years ago I was walking down the road with all my best tools in a nice case and my wife walking beside me. Then a van pulls up and two thugs jumped out and demanded I give them the case or they would take my wife...Long story short, good tools are hard to replace and the new wife is working out fine!

Sux to get robbed. There used to be a company installing car alarms that would call the owner's cell phone if the alarm was tripped, or allow the owner to call the car, listen to whatever was going on inside, talk to the people who stole it, and if necessary kill the engine, lock and jam the doors, roll up the windows, and release a pepper spray canister... of course the ACLU thinks criminals have rights and put the company out of business.

As for meters, I use a fluke, but only because one of the machines I'm trained on supposedly required something this fluke was able to do and I got my boss to spring for it. I find the meter really don't matter so much as the probes - I special ordered a set of needle probes from Ames that I highly recommend even though they probably cost more than your meter did. Not sure if Ames is even still in business or if they still carry them, but somebody does.

Reminds me of a sign I saw in a Mechanic's shop:

Some things we hold dear in life,
The tools of our trade and our wonderful wife.
Please don't ask to borrow our tools,
We won't ask to borrow your wife.

I always wanted to plug my Les Paul into an O-scope. Just wondered what it would look like....

                Re: Feel violated here...

A few years ago I accidentally left the metal tool box on the back of my truck unlocked one night. I thought it was a relatively "safe" neighborhood. Woke up, to find the lid wide open everything inside gone. Everything was lying in the neighbors yard. All I had in there was the factory wheel jack and lug wrench, a bungee cord, a pair of gloves, a cheap dollar store screw driver...

And the only thing they took of value was an old Craftsmen tool case, that I kept the gloves and screw driver in. The old kind with the metal lid and two locking tabs and the little tray on top. Probably sold it for scrap.

Assholes even tried to use my tools to break in the neighbors car but failed. LOL

Also as far as meters go, I rarely use mine. Not sure what brand it is. I replaced the 9v battery once. In the 5 years had it. It was company issue so if its stole, I wont cry(much) over it.

For myself, I just use a basic vom. I used to get the best of the best but the readings I have to take, when I actually need to take readings, are all just basic readings and do not require the best meter available.

I want to carry as few tools as possible, yet have the right tool for each situation. It always a difficult balance.

Think of it as an opportunity to start from scratch with best quality tools and just exactly what you need. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The longer the walk to the call, the more i need to carry. What I don't take, will be exactly what I needed.
