I would have not thought of some of these...

Metal detector app?! serious? haha... for what, exactly?

I'm adding small switch and hub to the network tools side of things.
            And maybe cheap wifi router.

Re: Must-have specialty tools and parts for a tech

Why waste the money on a switch and hub?

Crossover cables work on any ethernet network and PC to device and are easy to make as long as you want.
Regular ethernet cables only work on a network switch or router.

I test their wi-fi with an app on my phone that shows signal strength, better channels available and surrounding wi-fi signal strength.
I test scan to email by sending an email to my phone.

I walk into most calls with a screwdriver, flashlight and a damp rag and go back for what I need.

Search for drivers on the internet and save them to a file you update and reload a USB thumb drive.
Buy or Google for all the manuals as you need them and save them.
Download for customer and save it on your thumb drive.

Before you know it you will have all you need without a huge investment all at once.

The only real things you need in this career is heart and an individual pride that you made a machine run well that really shouldn't work at all.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Got one of these sometime back
Connect direct to normal network cable and you have a crossover cable

You may want to carry a small wired router as well, as some IT admins will freak out if they see you broadcasting their network wirelessly.
i also highly recommend installing Wireshark on your notebook, and actually learning it (lots of free tutorials on it) You'll find that most IT departments don't have a good handle on it.

if you want to do packet captures ( I do at least once a week ), you will need a hub ( a switch won't work ).
I found a 10/100 hub on eBay a few years ago. It cost me all of $13.00.

Some of us actually have to do IT troubleshooting to prove to the customer that it's their problem not the machine. It sucks and it happens....

A hub will broadcast all packets to all ports, a switch will filter the broadcast to a port with a certain ip. that's the difference.
