Had a customer who was printing off pre-formatted forms on a B/W machine and the data fields were all coming out a solid black. they insisted it printed off perfectly on a different machine. The other machine was colour. The electronic version of the document had a very pale-blue background on the data-fields. I couldn't convince her that that was why they were getting solid black data fields, and that the only solution was to edit out the pale blue background or revert to printing on the colour machine She called the office and requested an 'proper' engineer. A tech-spec was sent out, he came to the same conclusion and charged them twice for the call.

I'd love to be able to beat customers to death sometimes. This is a classic example of why engineers should be able to say to their manager "pull the machine, they're too stupid to use it."
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

      Hit it.

Worked on a canon clc 1100 series a few years ago, and it has a transfer drum that uses static to keep the paper registered as it applies one color each rotation. So a color print requires four rotations. The model came with tweezers to remove paper from the belt area, it would adhere very hardily. Found the paper jamming at first pass, not staying on the xfer screen. Suspecting a hvt issue, and was in the process of troubleshooting when a lady came in and told me she had issues removing the jam, and sprayed anti static she used for her skirt as she felt the static was the issue. I was dumbfounded that someone would do something like that, but it turned out replacing the screen and cleaning with alcohol did the trick. As dismayed I was, I was just happy she told me, as I could have been working on that for hours. Amazing some customers don't cause serious injuries to themselves with some of the things they do to the equipment.

In the office in the mornings i heard the then senior techs in the office complaining about a machine that would make the edges of the prints black, they changed the developer then the drum and the charge unit then the entire image unit. Being a high volume machine the stuff is expensive. And the call just came back every time. Not abble to face the customer anymore i got sent out to the machine. Looking at the problem i noticed that they are using corral draw to print and they added cutlines that forced the machine to print those fine lines in full bleed running over the edge of the paper making the edges black. So i got the lady operating it to move them in by .5mm and the problem was gone. But the thing that got me the most is that they cut the edges off anyway!!! so the final product was ok and they still complained!
