Thanks slim. She's really late. Usually it late December/early January to lay her eggs, then hatching by late January. Still I'm happy for her.

We have an egg! The first egg in Decorah was laid tonight at 8:28pm central time. Congratulations to Mom and Dad Decorah, a huge thanks to John for his camera work, and a toast to Bob, the board, our wonderful volunteers, and the bridge that carries us over

We have a second egg at Fort St. Vrain! E32 was laid last night at 8:17pm. Thanks to Elfruler for the video, which is quite similar to what we saw in Decorah. Mom sits quietly and shifts from foot to foot as the egg passes, occasionally spreading her wings just a bit. At 3:38, she puts her head down and sits almost motionless until roughly 4:40. The Fort St. Vrain nest is located next to the St. Vrain river on the grounds of Xcel Energy's Fort St. Vrain plant. The cam can be watched at these two locations:

Whatta night! Congratulations to Mom and Dad Decorah on their third egg of the season, laid at 6:59PM CT on February 25th! While the event was interrupted by a computer issue, watchers got to see Mom's contractions and hear her soft chirps as she laid her 26th egg. We've all been straining our necks for a glimpse of it at the bottom of Dad's deep nest cup!

Hatching occurs 35-37 days after eggs are laid, so we will start anticipating hatch sometime around March 27. So far, Mom and Dad have followed almost exactly the same egg lay schedule they did last year - egg #3 was laid just two minutes later in 2016 than it was in 2015.

Here's to another good year for the whole family!

The marvels of modern technology....
Some genius has made an electronic plastic egg surveillance device to place in the nests of Eagles an other endangered birds. Great idea , just that someone forgot to tell the development team that most birds can tell the difference between a live an a dead egg. One smell from the birds and the electronic egg will be out of the nest an all over the ground or water below.

I hope the team didn't take a million dollars to develop it .....?

Interesting to see the out come of their research though....

Huh, I had no clue someone actually built an egg cam. So my last post was pretty moronic, sorry about that.
The eagle cams here are just regular video cameras in nearby trees. Turns out birds can't tell the the difference between them and tree branches, so you're right, an actual egg cam does seem a bit much.

The chicks at the Alcoa site have shed most of their fluff and now have feathers.
Looks like the mayflies are bothering them now. At this time of year there are huge swarms of mayflies in that area.
I hope you don't have to deal with mayflies, they are quite possibly one of the stupidest insects ever. When they are in their larval stage in the the Mississippi river they are actually quite ferocious for their size, but in their adult form they can't sting or eat, they just fly around and mate. And they are the major producers of bug splats on the windshields of cars during this time, which windshield washer fluid technology apparently hasn't advanced enough to clean off.

Not to hijack the thread or change subject, I swear by Rain X Bug Remover Washer Fluid for summer driving. Doesn't completely get rid of all of the mess but it's better than anything else out there short of a scrubber sponge.

I've never seen nor heard of Mayfly's, I had to google it.
The insect is sort of like a cross between a grasshopper an a dragonfly.

When the months an butterfly's get covered over the windscreen while night driving, I would pull into a service-station and put bug-remover in the windscreen washer bottle. If bug-remover wasn't available I would buy methylated spirits an put about 1/3 per volume in the washer bottle.
