      Re: Techs Laptops

Not so much the brand, as the features, I would stay away from Windows 8 if possible, at least 500GB HDD, 4 gb ram, wireless and Bluetooth, integrated camera. We sign for them, and if lost, could run close to $1k for replacement cost. Company has strict policies about leaving in vehicle, loading unlicensed programs etc..Nothing out of the ordinary. Don't think we are quite ready for IPAD/Android as tool of choice. IMHO Emujo
If you don't see your question answered in the forum, please don't think it's OK to PM me for a personal reply...I do not give out firmware and/or manuals.

My company does not provide laptops. We are on our own, Last one I bought had Windows 8. YOU DO NOT WANT WINDOWS 8.

          Re: Techs Laptops

Have a pair of Acer AspireOne netbooks, one running windows xp and one running windows 8. They're small little 13" units, not ideal for any multimedia activity other than Skype if absolutely necessary. They have all my manuals and connectivity requirements, they fit the bill well enough.

The W8 netbook was not headed up through our IT dept., and just snagged from a random store for the sole purpose of testing out connectivity with Windows 8. It's built to minimum specs, and has trouble starting up the operating system. It's a very laggy little box, obviously straining that little intel ATOM processor to its limits. I was quite thrilled when I got it, as it allowed me to save a few customers some heartbreak when they jumped on the Windows 8 bandwagon as soon as it was released prior to consulting us if their existing equipment would still work with it...

I prefer the xp unit, even though xp is now unsupported, simply because the hardware in that one suits xp much better and it's a lot more snappier.
I may have spoiled myself in building my last 2 computers, if something doesn't react in less than 3 seconds it starts bothering me. My fault for going with an i7 3770k, 16gb of RAM and an R9 290x graphics card on an SSD. I get concerned when I don't see my desktop 10 seconds after I start my computer...

After 6 years, the boss let me buy it outright, cheap. I've got 2 more years since then, and I care for it like a baby. I'm hoping for another year before i have to replace it. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Purchased a surface pro 3 when it came out. Very fast, lightweight, great device for a technician.

I have a company provided lower end Acer Aspire(2012ish). It's about 15inch screen, core i3, running Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell. Before that I had an Acer Aspire running XP, which is now been handed down to our newer techs.

We've got an old Dell Vostro that I loaded Linux Mint on for s&g in the shop.

Now I'm not really a Mac person but I'm considering a MacBook Air for personal use. Would love to get my hands on a Chrome book too. I'm also bout due to build a new desktop too.. Well I'm rambling on about computers now and getting off topic. Lol

chromebooks are essentially worthless. no disc drive, no rpd, no storage, needs wifi to do anything, crashes constantly.

Acer Aspire 1810T since more than 4 years my best friend. Using a boot manager to operate it with W7-32 Professional, W7-64 Home and ofcourse XP-32. Only disadvantage I can find is the missing 3G option. I use either a separate stick or the hotspot tethering of my mobile phone for Internet access.

Actually these perceptions are changing. However I wouldn't expect this to replace a real laptop. However there are guides to sideloading Linux on the machines. You can also have remote desktop function thru chrome.

Would make a good second computer for causal Web browsing etc. Or a good machine for granny cause it's low maintenance.

Lenovo T410 with dock and extra screen when I'm at my desk. Bluetooth it to my phone when I'm out in the field so I can access the web. I managed to get the last laptop to run with XP. I don't care if our IT nerds sneer at me, I like XP. It's stable and does every thing I want it to do so I see no reason to change.
In the all the years we've been equipping techs with laptops we've only lost one when the techs car was broken into and since it was several years old by then management decided just to write it off rather than much around with insurance claims.
However the number of times techs ring in expecting me to look up part numbers for them cos their too lazy to walk back to their car to grab their laptop is unbelievable.

Have thought about equipping them with tablets but until they come with bigger storage and you can rid them of all the useless factory loaded apps its not an option.
Also lack of USB ports on Ipads rules them out instantly. And don't go on about using the Cloud 'cos thats just a IT wet dream.
At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.

HP Mini 5103. Provided by the company. Althought they are small, they feel heavier than they should, and are slow as all buggery.

                          DO NOT WANT.

Also the screen is so small, you'd hard time looking at wiring diagrams if that's what you do often.
