    Mileage reimbursement question,

Our company pays 300 dollars a month and roughly 17 cents a mile based on the gas prices. can I get feedback on what other companies offer? of course we use our own car. and we dont get a gas card. Thanks

    Re: Mileage reimbursement question,

Sounds like Runzheimer....the more you drive, the less you get reimbursed for that mileage. The good news...multiply 56 cents (or whatever the IRS says is current) by total miles, subtract what Runzheimer paid and the remainder is a tax deduction. There are some differences on what you can claim depending on whether you are in compliance or not, but I am not a CPA and would not want to offer advice on what to do in either case, but you only have to report mileage reimbursement on the monies you have not been taxed on. All I can add to what emujo said is that there is probably a standard commuting mileage that needs to be subtracted from your daily total miles driven for it to be compliant with the IRS rules.
Still, it would be a good idea to check this out with a qualified tax adviser. Bring all your receipts.

          Re: Mileage reimbursement question,

Regardless of what you get paid, keep an accurate record of your mileage, copy of what you submit to your employer will do, and what your employer pays you for using your own vehicle. The amount per mile that the IRS allows you deduct is based on more than just fuel. It also includes an estimated amount for vehicle maintenance, tires, etc. If you keep all receipts, you can add them together, prorate them for the percent of miles used for work, and if the is greater than the mileage amount, you can deduct the larger amount.

When I was working for a company, I think I was getting a flat $ .45 per mile.

It's great....just about every customer gets an immediate response, the amount of times I've walked past an office as they log a call....it means I don't have to carry loads of parts in car....I just pop back & get what I need as the coffee they've made me cools to a drinkable temperature

I have known techs in large cities whose territory was a single building. Used the elevator to go from call to call.

I met some people like that when I went to the local core (Chicago's western 'burbs) for training a while back. Those guys didn't keep any parts, what parts they needed were delivered by bike messengers.

And at at the other end of the spectrum... I once knew a tech in North Dakota whose closest account to home was 90 miles away... About 300 for the farthest.
