    Sharp MX-3501N "ERROR CODE L4-06"

    Guys,

I'm new to the site and I'm looking for assistance on how to clear a error code (L4-06) on a Sharp MX-3501N. We service the copier and installed a new fuser and toner (magenta). After completing all these tasks the machine display an error L4-06. What this error means and how do I clear it. Your help and assistance will be greatly appreciated...

    Best Regards

L4-06 is Primary Transfer Lift Trouble.

First thing is tell us the serial number of the machine.

The serial number is critical in determining if the modifications have already been fitted in the factory to prevent this code. If your machine was manufactured before June 2008, then the modified parts (Main Drive Unit) have not been fitted, as your machine is using the original design.

The problem comes from a damaged clutch shaft within the main drive unit itself, causing the transfer belt unit to not fully load into the correct position for black transfer, color transfer or free position.

If your machine was made before June 2008, I can almost guarantee that you'll need a new main drive unit, especially if the machine has done several hundred thousand pages total.

The problem can also be caused by dirty or faulty transfer position sensors on the inside rear frame. Near the toner pipes, you'll see 2 sensors which interact with the 2 flags on the transfer belt unit. These sensors detect the position the belt is in (color, black, free). You can check the operation of these sensors in sim 30 (items 1TUD_CL for the color sensor, 1TUD_K for the black sensor).
Sometimes these sensor can get abit of toner contamination in them, so check/clean them. If they dont work in simulation, you have a faulty sensor. These are less likely than a main drive unit being at fault. I'm giving you all the possible causes here....

Run the transfer belt position test in sim 6. It will cycle through the 3 positions on the display (color, black, free, color, black, free etc etc). If it seems to stay on one position for alot longet time than the others, then for sure you have a main drive unit problem, as the clutch is turning the position of the shaft until it finally gets into place.

Also, check the transfer belt unit cam is not overly tight. If it seems harder than normal to rotate, a few tiny spots of lubricant on the cams front & rear can also help.

Installing the fuser & toner recently have nothing to do with the fault. This is sheer coincidence.

Changing a main drive unit will take you over 1 hour for the first one. I've now got it down to fully replace & working in under 15 mins as I've done quite a few..........

If you need any help on this, let us know. This code is something I'm very familiar with. There are changes you need to make to the wiring harness on the new main drive unit too.

I thank you for help and support. Once I change the main drive I will need your assistances to accomplish the task. The site and you are very helpful. Again; thank you and I will wait for instructions.

Have you done any diagnostics of all the tips I mentioned above, or just presumed the main drive unit is damaged? What is the machine's serial number? If your production run was after June 2008, then the updated main drive unit is already installed, and the problem will be one of the other items I mentioned.

The updated main drive unit (complete unit) for your machine is CFRM-1186DS58 (MX3500/4500 series) if you are sure that is what's required.

Dont just go ahead & replace the main drive unit without confirming the above mentioned items first. Could be something as simple as a dirty belt position sensor (which I've seen many times).
