    Newbie Looking For Help

    How is everyone,
Ive just discovered this site through a Google search and looks interesting so thought I'd join up.
I'm looking to become a Photocopier Engineer but i am unsure how to get into this field. Ive searched for courses/training on the internet but had no luck. Ive contacted various Photocopier dealers etc too in the Birmingham area but they are looking for experience.

I am 28 years old and from Birmingham, UK. Im technically minded and have the desire and aptitude to learn new things. Ive got a keen interest in computers/repairing and basically love troubleshooting and fault finding(taking apart and fixing things). Ive completed level 3 electrotechnical technology so have got some knowledge of motors etc.

So my question is..how do i go about gaining work in this field. Ive got no experience as such so would need training and then would learn and gain new skills on the job.

If anyone could help me on this that would be excellent and very much appreciated. I know some of you guys started somewhere

Send your CV into the major manufacturers - Ricoh, Canon, Konica etc. Some of them run training academies and would train you from the ground up.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

The only training for copier repair I have ever heard of is done through on the job training. In order to get a copier repair job, you usually have to have some training in electronics.
But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard... to be the Shepherd.

        Hi Neilabz83

I myself fell into the trade quite by accident the dealers you've found are throughout the UK but dont necessarilly just cover the area where they are based so its worth contacting ones around the country and finding out how far they cover.
I used to work for a company called Principals based in horsham sussex, maybe try them to see if they cover Birmingham they were Konica's biggest dealer.
It was one of these that started me off working on both Konica Minolta and Canon with training being as mentioned before 'on the job' complimented by courses from the manufacturers.
I would try to locate some that might cover your area though they may not be based nearby or the major manufacturers which cover nationwide. Unfortunatly this is the only way i know of in the UK to join this field there are no courses as such that I am aware of.
Check out the employment forum there's a guy looking for staff in Birmingham area ad's 4 wks old but worth giving it a go.
        Good Luck

          Welcome mate,
Come to Australia. Seems every dealer needs a tech here and no one to fill the positions. Just keep away from my area. hehe.

It's the same with me. Apparently Fate wanted me to be a copier tech.

I had moved to southern Michigan and was working a minimum wage job at a paint shop line. Load greasy parts to the line. Unload hot painted parts. Load greasy parts onto the line. Unload ... you get the idea. Your average chimpanzee could perform this job.

I had set myself a goal of 5 applications/resume's per day. During a single week I had interviews with the Mita dealer, the Savin dealer, and the Ricoh dealer. I wasn't even looking for a technician job. I was just answering every employment notice I thought I might get hired for. At the second (Mita dealership) perhaps 30 of us were administered the Bennett Mechanical Test. Of the 30, twenty eight of the applicants got 30% or less. I was in the two at 95%, and both of us were offered a job the next day.

Sometimes it helps to take a delivery driver job. When a tech position opens up, there you are.
Another successful approach is to volunteer for every tech related activity.
-Deliver toner? Sure, and I'll install it too.
-Shuttle parts to a tech? You bet. Can you show me how that gets installed? How can I help?
-Glass needs cleaning? I can do that.
-The machine I just delivered doesn't work? Maybe I can fix something.

When our Ricoh specialist started getting bogged down, I volunteered to take any calls he couldn't get to.
-Dirty filthy machine/toner spill? Sounds like fun.
            -100 miles away? Road trip!
Within 3 months I was allocated a chunk of Ricoh machines. I had not one minute of Ricoh training.

If this forum is a representative sample, copier techs stay in this line of work a long time, even if it's not with the same company. But openings do occur. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

              Welcome, Neil.

Sure there's plenty of tech schools offering the subject to get you in the market.

One sure fire way to be a copier tech is to work your butt off on high tech avionics gear for 4 years for the Navy with promises from Uncle Sam of $65-an-hour civilian jobs, get your Honorable, look for work in the field until you're frustrated, depressed and broke, then get picked up by a company working on ABDick mimeographs... and, vio la', 20 years later you're a senior toner sucker.

              But I'm not bitter.

              -I
              My name Peggy.
              You got problem?
