Thought I'd better say Hi to everyone!

Been lurking for a long time so it's only polite to introduce myself.
Guess I must be one of the oldest Techs here, 58 and counting! 35+ years experience of office equipment, workshop and site, and still dumbstruck about the attitude of customers

I wish you all well with your endeavours

Glad to have you join us.

58? There are a number of us who are over 60. For myself, I am 66 with 42+ years in the business.

Our staff (service) probably average around 40-45. We have not had any young blood in years. When the 90% of us already above 50 retire in 10-12 years, a ton of experience will be walking out the door. I just don't think copier service is a job many folks want to do anymore. Might be just the thing to get our pay rates up...supply/demand seems to work fine when it comes to making things cost more. I know that many dealers are trying to get into the "professional service" side of this business, but you can throw a 100K+ software solution into the account, it wont work if the MFP has a bad feed clutch. I would love to be a 20 something with a background in IT and know my way around a screwdriver. You can write your own ticket in this industry. I feel for the old dogs that just can't catch up....not much need for someone who can only replace a UFR, todays tech must have a solid background in IT, and be able to communicate effectively with the account IT staff for problems. Welcome! I'm always surprised by how many techs have no troubleshooting skills whatsoever. If a parts swap doesn't fix it, they are completely lost. There will always be room for the old timers that still know what a meter is for. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
              5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Re: Thought I'd better say Hi to everyone!

I stopped using meters when I started wearing glasses...and at least with KM connectors, you can't get a lead in w/o the very good chance of shorting something. If I have to use a flashlight and a magnifying glass then I turn the call over to someone else. I have earned that privilege. That doesn't mean I can't turn on a load or check a sensor state, but if it turns out to be a shorted diode, then it won't be me that found it...LOL

Nice to meet you. I'm 61. I look forward to giving and receiving help via this website. I've been a tech for about 30 years but a copier/printer tech for just the past 2 years. I mostly service HP printers but I also work on Lexmark, Canon, Ricoh, Xerox and soon Toshiba.
