Just in case it got by... General info

I have not seen it posted as a question yet, but I have had it as a call twice in three weeks, and it got by the IT people, who I guess create the problem.

Call 1... On a Minolta 3102 color, one user is sending print jobs that the machine is creating this nice red orange paper to print it on. Solid deep orange paper with yellow spots. Beautiful.

Call 2...On an HP 9000 one user is sending print jobs that the machine is printing and then diverting out the fuser exit while all other users have theirs exit out on top.

In each case the problem was created when the affected user was given a computer upgrade that had Vista. In other words the IT people had installed XP drivers in a Vista system.

Keep your eyes open and trust no one! I also run into people instaling drivers for wrong modle printer and it will work a lot of times, like HP 4500 drivers on a 4600. Prints text OK but screwed up pics.

Yeah, I've seen this a few times too. It really grates my cheese when you have to go out and fix it for the IT staff, after you called them on the phone to verify they were using the Vista driver. Sonsabitches.

Service contract or not, they get billed....... We have started to bill all calls that have to do with an IT created or computer crashed, was reformatted and now I can't print or scan issue.... So sorry, it's not a fault with our equipment. I will try to help over the phone, but half the time your talking to a non tecky, and instead of a half hour phone conversation I tell them we have to come out and they will be billed.

I agree, it's totally billable. IT just aggravates me when you make a recommendation and then they don't do it.

Connected products are set up when we deliver them and then any network related change not due to machine failure is a billable instance.

I love those calls, we bill separately for our network support time.

My personal favorite "Color machine only prints in Black & White!"

...when you send your print jobs to a Copystar CS-C4035E via a HP 5si print driver! Jeez, why do you think a black & white print driver can't print color? Duh!

This, from college edumacated IT professionals. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

In some cases, I've had problems with people not using the correct driver but only with one application. If the end user changes printers, they can select the driver from their PC, so no problem. Unfortunately, there are certain applications that require administrator rights or have to be changed from the server to change the printer driver. To me, the software developers should never have made it that way in the first place. Since a 4200 printer will still work with a 4000 driver, it is not considered a priority issue and gets moved to the bottom of the list, because the end user is not down. This is going to happen more frequently as due to the economy there are fewer IT people (copier and printer techs too) for the work load. The problem you're seeing with XP drivers used on Vista is likely caused by this. After all, who has time to download the correct driver when you already have a list too long to get to for the day and you already have an XP driver installed that seems to work fine. One of the first things I eliminate is the PC when troubleshooting, because these issues can be very frustrating. It's just going to be one of those things we have to deal with and try to educate IT people and end users about. Eventually they'll get on the same page...by then we'll have a new version of windows and it'll start all over again. One of the things that makes our job so... interesting! LOL.
