Re: How money is made in copier biz?

I am in South-Africa so the logistics of it is a bit different but the rest should be all the same.

On one of our production machines the cost to run it is say R0.015c and we charge R0.04. The volume is about 500K on average per month. So 500000 x 0.015 = R7500 vs 500K x 0.04 = 20000.
Not bad and we are still the cheapest. $1 = R20.

You need 4 of those machines to make a living.
    Whatever

Nah 🤪 thanks but sitting in office makes me feel sick. Nothing can compare with fixing broken machine and in timely manner you are good to head for the next.

I see your point. However, for me, there's no better feeling in the world than closing a big sale. The rush is incredible. And the bigger the sale, the bigger the rush. There's a LOT that goes into a sale. Sometimes the process can take a year or longer.

PS - I still enjoy repairing a copier or PC but the older I get, the less patience I have with a lot of customers when it comes to being a tech. Rarely do they understand what I'm saying nor do they care a lot of times.

I feel the need to add to what I said. It's complicated.

I don't like sales. Most times I hate it. I'm an introvert. Moreso in a social setting. So, sales didn't come naturally to me. I have to force myself to make sales calls. I procrastinate like a MF'er. But I always eventually force myself to make my sales call. The only thing I like is when they actually say yes. And I get a lot of no's before that happens.

Today I sat down all day and got one service call for paper jam which only took me 5 minutes to clear out that hidden paper jam ans that was it. My boss is rarely at the office as he works from home 95% of the time. His wife is the one who answers all of the incoming calls and dispatch the service calls to us and also she does all the toners ordering and etc.. I'm starting to feel unsecured about my job.
Start looking up authorized Kyocera dealers and putting in your resume. They are dying to get you...trust me. You will have the opportunity to advance your career and make more money. Stay where you are and you are doomed to limited opportunity and a dealer feeding off of existing service revenues instead of sales and service revenue growth. Once they are too broke to staff a sales rep the end is in sight. Is the wife the bookkeeper?

I could spend paragraphs explaining how money is made by dealers who run their business' the right way but clearly yours is not.

You are smart enough to read the landscape and ask the right questions, go find a dealer where you do not have to worry about the 'Mom & Pop' syndrome.

As a tech, your task is to maintain a territorial click count that generates your hourly run rate (salary+costs) plus 55% profit to feed the rest of the organization. That's all the math you need.

I like simple cash sales. Getting machines of the books. Toner sells. That is what I do in the mornings advertising on what ever platforms. Noting wrong if everything is mutual the money is welcome. I do not do that if I am running calls then I need to focus. I am bored with that.

Very good if this is that simple.

Fortunately our boss is genius in selling and I mean by far!
So I'm not expected nor going to do what anyone's doing the best. Keep it simple stupid

I don't know but I have a young Technician in training that keeps trying to use Chat GPT to fix machines instead of using the manuals and I've had enough!

As to how money is made in copier biz? We call it sales and clicks!

I've always been a little bit curious as to how much money can be made from this industry as well - we keep getting told that "Printing is dead" etc, but the sales guys & managers seem to drive around in pretty nice cars. Being in the technical side, there doesn't appear to be much money coming my way.

But i guess, renting is guaranteed income for a fixed set of months, even if it is only $130 p/month as the original poster said, once you start getting a few customers and if a number of them have more than 1 machine, that number starts to add up. Your going to want about 100 machines your renting out per month just to cover a single person business, so the more people working there the more machines needed out there paying you.

Also, i assume if you add a few other services along the way as well to help.

Q1: Are there any here that run their own business, and make enough money mainly doing service work?

Q2: Also, it would be interesting to hear what other services people offer to help supplement the monthly rent coming in etc.

I've thought for a number of years, i wouldnt mind doing it for myself

I remember when the hospitals in my territory went to using a "Paperless medical records" They did away with the patient record jackets being kept at the nurses station and replaced them with a couple of terminals for the doctors to use. Thew initial result was an actual increase in the paper used. Anytime a doctor or med tech needed to visit a patient they would print the record and put it on a clip board to take with them. When they finished their rounds all those printouts went in the shredders. THey eventually wised up and got pad computers for everyone to use.
