    Carbonite kills SMB scans??

I have a customer using Carbonite for backup. The problem is with scan to folder. Rebooting the pc seems to be the only way to get it to work. Once its rebooted in the morning, it will work for the rest of the day. Carbonite kicks in after hours.

Can anyone confirm that they have had this issue also, Carbonite and Ricoh have no info about this.

Carbonite shouldn't kill access to the machine in any way. Can you get a full description of what happens from the customer? What type of MFP are they using?

Is it a basic server running Windows 7? Potentially all of the SMB sessions may be used during the backup, depending on how the backup process actually works, e.g. transmits over the network via SMB to a backup server of sorts. I've seen this happen before.

Can you or their I.T. rep check the event logs?

Anyway not your issue really, it's on the customer's end, but getting them to admit to that....

        Re: Carbonite kills SMB scans??

Depending on the amount of data to be backed up and the speed of their connection, Carbonite might still have threads open blocking other devices from accessing the drive.

        Things to try:
        1. If Carbonite can be configured to automatically reboot the computer when it finishes, do so. If the computer has not rebooted when the customer comes in the next morning, Carbonite has not finished running and as such might not have backed up everything. They may need to have it start earlier in the evening.
        2. Make certain that they are only backing up essential data and not the entire system each day. Entire system should only be done the first time ran and on weekends. The rest of the time, only new or changed data should be backed up.
        3. The folder that scans are sent to should not be included in the list of data to backup. This way Carbonite will never have any links into the folder. New scans should be renamed and moved to a different folder.

Either way, unless you are the customer's IT provider, it is not your responsibility. If you are their IT, contact Carbonite support for any further assistance on properly setting up Carbonite. You will need the customer's account information from Carbonite.
