    Interesting Savin Print Issue

I am posting this here, because this could possibly carry over to other brands, so...
One of our larger customers called with a print issue on a new Savin 9021d. When I called to check on the problem, I was told that they were using a old fax server to capture all their incoming faxes. It then sends these fax documents to individually assigned printers, which is done through a IBM print server, as a raw PCL data stream. The problem they were having was that everytime the print server sent a job to the 9021d, from the fax server, it would only pull from Tray 2 which was loaded with 11x17.

So, when I got there, I checked the tray priority settings from the printers settings in User Tools. It was set to Tray 1. Knowing the PCL data stream could call not only for a specific tray, but can also call for a specific paper size. So I traded out the 11x17 with 8.5x11. It printed perfectly. Only problem here was that they already had 8.5x11 in tray 1. Simple fix here is to swap the paper in the trays. Well, the IT guy I was dealing with and I both are the type that want to know what the hell is going on and how to fix it.

So we go back to the server room and take a gander at the settings of the fax server and the associated print on the iPrint Server. *NOTE* It was at this point that I noticed the 9021d was being associated with a HPLJ5Si. Very common practice, even before our MFP supported IPDS, you could do this on a AS400 to make it print properly*/NOTE* We couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, so we did a file capture and used Downloader2006 to look directly at the PCL code for a test print to the 9021d in question. Well, nothing to it... the PCL was calling for Letter paper in the 1st cassette (main paper source). He e-mailed me the capture file and I told him I would take a closer look at it.

Well, last night I looking at the Ricoh PCL Reference Guide and found that our MFP's see code 8 as the first paper tray and when I checked this against the PCL capture we did, I found that the stream was using code 1. Well, I knew that I had seen something along these lines in a PowerPoint Presentation that I had seen, so I started digging and low and be hold I found it. There was a PDL Filter powerpoint floating around out there, that actually addressed what used to be an add-on to our MFP's, but is now installed from the factory. It also showed how to use it. In this, what you do is find what code your stream is asking for and place it in the box for the appropriate tray. This can be found, on most newer Ricoh MFP's, by logging into WIM, then under configuration choose Paper Tray Parameters (PCL) under Printers.

Anyway, I got an e-mail back from the IT member I was working with this moring and he said that this fixed the problem. But he was a little ticked off that 20 other machines that we have installed there in the past year works perfectly fine without this additional step. My quick answer to him would be to upgrade his old as hell fax server. My other answer would be, "I agree totally!".

Don't I know this story! When the customer doesn't use the manufacturers driver, who knows what's going to happen? The data capture is the key to diagnosing this.

What a combination! An ancient fax server and a HP LJ5Si driver!

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
