Why do Emailed PDF get larger

Does anyone know why this happens. It only happens when sent exxternally. A scanned file I sent to a customer & copied myself on was 3.8mb when I rec'd it & almost 9mb when the customer rec'd it. Just curious. Tried to Google but couldn't really find an answer.
    Thanks,
    Hope that helps !

That's a major increase in file size. I know that some encoding does take place, which can add about 30% to the file size and adds overhead to the file.

The destinations may have different default compressions or resolutions. Sharp? In the address book on the webpage you can set the default to PDF G4 for the best compression

That's because all binary have to be encoded using only a subset of the full 255 byte ASCII set. So a binary file like an Acrobat file has to be encoded into a different format, so it will normally end up 20-30% bigger than the original file. So, instead of the full 255 bytes, only the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and + and / are used.

        See Wikipedia here:
        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base64

(Binary files according to this are actually 137% bigger on average)
