    Latest Windows Update/BSOD

There have been many threads on the problems created with the latest Windows Update: 5000802 & 5000808. There have been different suggested optional updates to fix the problem. Some of the suggestions are wrong. Some are correct. This has been my experience in the field and back here at the office.

Yesterday I was called out to address this issue on 3 PC's at the same location. I could have kicked the can down the road by uninstalling the updates and pausing all future updates for 30 days. Instead I opted to install the optional updates to fix the problem once and for all.

    Here's what happened:

It took over an hour per PC to download & install the optional updates from: Microsoft Update Catalog

Sometimes if you go to Windows Update it will give you the option of installing the necessary optional update. It's much quicker if this option is available. Otherwise you're gonna have to go to MicroSoft Update Catalog.

You can save yourself some time by downloading all the optional window's updates to a USB stick. I highly recommend doing this because the customer may have a slow internet connection and you're gonna be there a lot longer.

Anyway, sitting at the customer PC for of an hour is uncomfortable because they're usually sitting right across the desk and staring at a computer screen for that long while trying to keep a conversation going is not fun.

If you have to download the optional updates from from Microsoft Update Catalog you're gonna have to use Micosoft Edge Browser. Chrome did not work for me.

Here are the optional updates that I know work:

    Win 10 v.20H2 - KB5001649

    Win 10 v.2004 KB5001649

    Win 10 v. 1909 - KB5001648

    Win 10 v. 1809 - KB5001638

    Win 10 v. 1803 - KB5001634

    Win 10 v. 1507 - KB5001631

    Re: Latest Windows Update/BSOD

By the way, this is what I'm talking about when installing Windows Update from their catalog site:

Windows 10 Cumulative Updates are way too slow to download and install

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi Microsoft,
I can no longer tolerate with the Cumulative Updates because it takes so long to download the security updates.
And I do not know what is the problems.
I don't think it is my ISP is causing the problems.
It could be the downloading time taken at Microsoft Server end in My Country or in the US to update the Windows Operating System.
This is ridiculous as it takes hell lot of time to download and install the security patches.
I think the Windows Operating System is some what Bloated. What is the bottle neck to download the security patches???
It takes me the entire day and night to get this done at my end. I have so many Windows to Update at my end.
I never had any updates issues with Linux. That takes minutes to complete.
Microsoft, come on. Can you please do something. This is way too much for us to handle the situation our end.
Can the Microsoft CEO Look in to the matter?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi MRusli,

Welcome to our new Microsoft Q&A Platform.

Sometimes the updates are long and slow, like the one for 1909 if you had a much older version. Except network factors, firewalls, hard drives also could cause the slow updates.

Please refer to the following methods and check if them helps:

Could you tell me which version of your Windows 10? Suggest you updating your windows 10 version to 1909 version by the link below:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Try to run windows update troubleshooter to check if it helps.

If not helps, you could manually reset windows update components.

Make sure your computer does not have any third-party anti-virus software installed to eliminate the third-party problems.

Besides, if all the methods you had try and still update slowly, you could feedback this situation to Microsoft via Feedback Hub app.

Hope can help you. Have a nice day!

    Best Regards,

    Kiki

Same problem here on Windows 10 - average download speed: 92.5 kbps. Thats a joke.

I though it was a problem on the pre-installed Windows 10, so I did a clean install from latest ISO with Media Creation Tool. Same problem here. No results from troubleshooter. Fast SSD. Manual downloads also pretty fast.

Waiting over four hours for WU to download all the Office 2016 updates...

    To MS engineers,
Installing the updates can take serveral hours, while installing the windows itself takes only 20 min. Are you actually do some secret tasks behind the scene when updating? Or are you actually able to understand what is the root cause in your product? I believe Microsoft with many talent engineers should understand the problem, don't you?
Users like me just want to know why it takes hours to start the computer when we just need to open a doc file for some very urgent work which should consume 5 min.
In linux we can upgrade the system while still using it, isn't it too hard to implement?

The trouble is Windows has a fairly large user base that when something like this happens their servers are going to suffer. Plus there is the automatic updates where say 10 computers in an office will all update at the same time.

If the computers are all Windows 10 Professional on an Active Directory domain with a decent IT staff. The IT staff can control when and who get which updates. They get notification of upcoming updates and can download a deployment version of the update complete with documentation on exactly the update covers. They can then decide which users to push the update to initially for evaluation, often one of their own workstations first.

This morning I downloaded the latest optional update to fix the BSOD. I have a fast internet connection and a fast PC. It took about 35 minutes from start to end.

This has nothing to do with what you're talking about. I'm just saying....

Can you imagine a corporate headquarters with a 50 or more computers each having to download that patch individually. It would consume huge amount of band width.

I was at a school yesterday and some of the computers were old and slow. It took so long to download the update that I thought something was wrong....like it was hung up. I was so glad to finish up and get the hell out of there.

Ok, so I tried to do this yesterday, but I cannot be certain which update I need.
PC shows Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 Build 19041

This doesn't seem to correlate with any of the versions I see. ==^..^-

                    Re: Latest Windows Update/BSOD

One final note. I don't know what you guys are doing as far as charging the customer for fixing this problem but I'm charging all of my customers. Sometimes I've charged them twice. The first time I charged them for uninstalling the updates (before Microsoft released the fix) and then I charged them a 2nd time for installing the optional update.

None of this is part of the service contract that I offer and if I'm gonna assume the liability of installing the updates, I gotta get paid. Think about it. If power goes out during the update...the customer is gonna hold you responsible.

The download was only seconds, but it's taking a very long time to install. And I expected to use wusa, but apparently it has it's own installer built in.

                      And no BSOD. =^..^=

Yeah, the install takes the longest. Time it and let me know how long it takes. And, yes, it has it's own installer that doesn't allow you to install an incorrect update.

                          Less than 10 seconds download
19 minutes installing, most of that time it sat at 6%.
6 minutes to do the re-boot.

Less that 1/2 hour if you already have the update.

That's about what it took here on my PC but you can expect it to take MUCH longer at other locations...depending on many factors.
