I had to replace a controller board because of a bad modem chip once. Could ping it or ARP it but could print or scan.

This is also why you want to check the audio status in the onboard diagnostics. If it doesn't work there, then the hardware is at fault.

So, I just went to the onboard diagnostics in bios and ran the audio test. It played 8 different tones via the internal speaker. Is that the one you're talking about?

PS - I did the audio test on my Dell PC, not the problem machine. I just wanted to check it out.

You mean that's all I had to do to determine it was or wasn't a hardware problem?

That makes me feel kinda dumb.

I will run that test on the problem machine tonight.

That's the whole point of diagnostic mode: it takes out the OS as a possible cause of the issue.

I ran the internal audio diagnostics on the problem machine and it worked. I heard the tones from the internal speaker. That means the likely problem is a corrupt operating system. I'm gonna try to repair it.

I reinstalled Windows, drivers, bios and all updates. Still no sound. There's little doubt in my mind that this is a motherboard problem.

But I did plug the speakers into the monitor and now I have sound. Still no sound from rear or headphones and the RealTek drivers don't show up. The only drivers that are available are for the monitor.

In Control Panel - Sound on the Playback tab does it show both the monitor and the speakers as available options with a check mark on the monitor? If so highlight the speakers and click Set Default. When I connect my TV to my laptop using HDMI in order to watch a YouTube movie on the larger screen, it automatically defaults the playback to the speakers on the TV, much better quality sound.

For the most part, that should be fine. It's not 1998 any longer: DisplayPort and HDMI both carry audio and video. The need for a headphone jack speaker set into a desktop is antiquated at this point and offers all of the drawbacks of an analogue device: static, poor connection, etc.

                            It only shows the monitor.
