... I would agree. The slow to populate printer icon update seems to be a recent Win 11 update issue.

So far nothing in the Windows Release Health page for this for Windows 10 or 11, unless it's related to the HP SmartApp issue: Windows 11, version 23H2 known issues and notifications | Microsoft Learn

We had a similar problem many years ago with Windows 8 (or 8.1?). I was solved in a Windows update.
The we saw this again a couple a years ago after a W10 update. It was also solved after a Windows update but until this was released we used the solution I posted earlier.
Now the problem is back after a Windows update and the same solution seems to work but hopefully there will be a OS update this time also.

In my experience, launching a print job (from notepad for example) will bring up the printer in the control panel/settings menu, so you can change the preferences and default options.
Also if it's not a Windows Home, you can open printmanagement.msc and the interface is IMO better to install and manage than the Settings.

Settings is the worse thing Microsoft ever introduced IMO. Trying to dumb it down to be like Mac I guess

I have this problem too, even with some Windows 10 pc.
In addition, Windows automatically adds printers that I had deleted because they are no longer present.

For the problem of this post, I found a quick solution, because I don't feel like waiting (and I don't always have the time...).
Once I have finished installing the printer, if I see that the icon doesn't appear, I close all the windows settings, open a Word file, click to print, and there I can select the printer I have just installed.
Now the printer icon is also present in settings.

It seems almost like a device refresh problem.

i seem to recall last time i had this fix few years ago the lag was caused by it trying to download the printers icon instead of just displaying the generic one

I believe this is related to a recent Windows patch. We have one computer that has the cumulative update from October 2023 and it doesn't have the issue. All the other machines are on the January 2024 patch and they have this problem.

Yeah, this is recent, and very annoying. Every other bit of software on the PC will see the driver, but the one place you need to change default settings doesn't show anything for a while. Gotta love Windows Updates...

It has to do with how you access Printers. I just downloaded and installed the Ricoh IM C8000. I installed it by using Add Printer from the Printers folder, NOT Settings or Control Panel. I can access the Printers folder because I use Classic Shell.

Another voice for printmanagement.msc
I have it pinned to my taskbar. It's very easy to see printers offline or WSD installs from there which is important to me.

I remember this was a problem like 1-2 years ago but don't have the fix anymore, was similar with what you posted related to the manufacturer icons nod downloading or something.
