Macintosh woes - Ricoh and others

We installed a Ricoh MP 171 on a customer who, turns out, has a Mac. Of course, when my colleague installed the PCL drivers, the machines only prints out garbage.

Is the only solution for Mac printing the installation of a PostScript option (which, in this model, costs almost as much as the MFP itself)?

And, generally speaking, when a customer tells us he needs to print from Mac, should we always assume we need a PS-capable machine to do it?

I'm not Mac sawy, I don't even know how to install a printer on it without looking around for a bit, so any little bit of help is appreciated.

I'm not an expert on the newer Mac's but if a customer wants to print from a Mac, unfortunately PS is the only supported driver.

Before you buy the PS card I've had some success using the laserwriter driver setup as a generic HP (HPIII, II or I) and pointing to the copier IP address. If they just need to print e-mail or documents this might get you by, but if they use any adobe programs you will have problems.

In Windows each printer has it's own driver and you can have multiple versions of PS or PCL drivers for each model or manufacturer. Mac has 1 driver for many printers, so there will be 1 version of PS and 1 version of Laserwriter installed (or Canon has a proprietary driver for Mac). Then Mac uses PPD's as plugins for the PS driver.
    Hope this helps.

Install gutenprint for Mac no postscript needed.

Can they switch to Microsoft mode and print that way?
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

Generally speaking, Adobe and Macs go hand in hand. I can't remember why this is, but it can make a headache of things when trying to quote machines.

As soon as our sales guys here Mac, they make sure that the machine that they are quoting in has a Postscript option out of the box, or they spec the machine to suit.

DLP and iMind have got a couple of good ideads there, try those.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

iMind's suggestion saved my a$$. I suggest it to anyone having the same problem I did.

I was installing a Ricoh MP171SPF, but Guttenprint doesn't have it listed. I used the 161 driver, and it worked wonders.

            Top notch!

              Mac

The newer Macs run on a unix platform. You can use linux drivers specific for the model of your machine. RICOH doesn't support this. But it will work at your own risk. I was given a link to a linux site by RICOH tech support and soon lost it. So you could talk to them or google linux RICOH drivers for your model.

                  Unix Drivers From Ricoh

Here's the link to the Linux/Unix supported drivers mentioned in Homer's post. I have not used these for a Mac install.
