    Helpful Connectivity Software

I recently posted a thread in the "Rant" section about putting together a bundle of software for a 1gb Kingston flash drive I got for free. After doing some searching, I found a great site full of great little programs that run perfectly from a flash drive... but could also run from just about any laptop or PC.

Foundstone - A division of McAfee - Go to the right side of the page and go to the link titled free tools and resources. Lots of great "ethical hacking" stuff here as well as security related troubleshooting programs.

Search for software at SnapFiles.com - This is a search perfromed on snapfiles.com for freeware SNMP tools. Tons of great stuff here that, again runs from a flash drive, and can help anyone that might have problems when connecting equipment in varied situations.

These two sites have pretty much everything you would need or could think of needing. If you find yourself troubleshooting a MFP or printer with connectivity issues and walking outside a customers office to bang your head on the parking lot curb, you owe it to yourself to at least check some of these tools out. Seriously!!

Currently, I have several replica SNMP based software programs on my drive, just so I can experiment with different ones to see which one I like the best.

Hope this thread can be used for future reference for others and maybe others can post their thoughts on different products and such.

Thanks, Unisys12. I really appreciate your help, and everyone else at the forum that have bailed me out.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Thanks Blackcat... the more that's out there, the more we all can know.

Also, I ran across this while tooling around Google... Download details: Print Management Step-by-Step Guide

It's an Printer Management Console that can be added to Windows Server 2003 SP1 (R2).

Here's a nice freeware tool that will make most administrators cry.
But it can be very useful for searching out SMB shares and open ports.

Interested to know what benefit you find with SNMP tools over more traditional methods like ping and telnet.

Well, mostly to capture PC environments prior to installing a MFP, but also... well, just to be noisy . I mean it's not anything that you would use everyday or for troubleshooting, but in some cases it could benefit a salesperson to be able to capture all printers and MFPs currently installed on a network.

You know what... I take the troubleshooting back! There has been two instances we installed wholesale machines and when setting up scan-to features, we could not make the machine connect. It would print and fax all day, but would not scan. After installing a MFP management utility Ricoh uses (smart device monitor, which at start up, does a scan using SNMP to all capable machines on the network) and found that the machine was seeing, but could not communicate with program. After checking SNMP settings and verifying that everything was ok, we determined that the controller was bad. Once replaced, scan-to features worked perfectly.

Having a small utility that does not require installing can be very handy in situations such as that.
