Trouble with Samsung: Scanning to SMB on Windows 7

This may be an easy fix for someone who already knows but we're in the dark here as to how to go about resolving this issue.

This all pertains to SWS2 (the most recent web interface for all Samsung MFPs - the one with the purple bar at the top and admin/sec00000 login). The older style web interface works.

Trying to set up scanning to a shared folder on Windows 7 to no success. The error message on the display when attempting at the copier is "Network Error" and the error message on the web interface when hitting test returns "Operation Fail" during the second step, trying to login.

    Steps I have already taken:

*Duplicated this problem at our shop as well as the customer in need
*Tried several models of Samsung, including an 8540, two 6545s, and one 6250 all running latest firmware with the SWS2 web interface - not a lemon/board issue
*Tested those same copiers on Vista and XP computers to great success - it is Windows 7
*Made sure copier's IP settings are on the network using ipconfig /all and duplicating IP/DNS settings
*Attempted scanning using IP address instead of hostname
*Ensuring shared folder is shared with the correct permissions.
*Tested scanning to the folder with another manufacturer (successfully).
*Ports 139 and 445 both tested to be open using other manufacturer's machines as well as using the free software AdvancedPort Scanner.
*Uninstalled all Spyware/Anti-virus and disabled Windows Firewall
*Attempted what feels like every possible setting in SWS2
*Triple, Quadruple checked possible spelling mistakes

I left a message on our rep's voicemail, but we have received limited support from the factory in the past, and so I am turning anywhere for help. This seems like a potential catastrophe if we start upgrading firmware or seeing more Windows 7 machines.

Re: Trouble with Samsung: Scanning to SMB on Windows 7

I think you may have answered your own question: works fine under vista & xp, WON'T work under win7.
My network scan won't work on my HP, Or some of my older Konica-Minoltas under win7 either. You could try support.microsoft.com to see if they have an answer (probably not model or brand-specific).
I'm 90% sure it's an issue with the W7 operating system. I remember early versions of the OS had many problems with ports, print spoolers getting stuck, etc. I also distinctly remembering having my hardware (printer or scanner ) not work because it wasn't made part of my network's home group (something new in Win7 I think, as I'd never had to do it with any other OS before it).
The other possibility is the server is not enabled for SMB. If they have one. It's my understanding you need one to make it work. Either on or off-site.
I recently had a customer whose IT guy fought with their server for over 3 days trying to make SMB work. Microsoft's website stated that security issues are opened up by enabling the public share folders (or something like that) and he just couldn't make it work, so we finally gave up and used scan to email and ftp instead. Took like 10 minutes! Because a new email account was created for the machine, with its own login, pass, etc.

Windows 7 Scan to Folder SMB.pdf

Here are a couple of W7 settings to try. Make sure that file and printer sharing is enabled for both public and private networks.

I noticed I know nothing about the homegroup feature in Windows 7. All Canon and Kyocera models are showing in the network map under the same homegroup, and the Samsungs are under "Unknown"....... I will investigate to see how to add it to the homegroup

I generally don't fight with windows 7. Most of my issues stem from the "dumbed down" versions of 7. I've never had a scanning issue with ultimate or professional, much like xp pro, it has the advanced sharing features.. And if all else fails I fall back to FTP which tends to work where smb refuses to cooperate.

            Regards!
            A.

Just an update: UNINSTALLING "Windows Live Essentials" fixed the problem on 2/3rds of our problem machines. Still investigating the last one, as it did not have "Windows Live Essentials" installed to begin with.

I work for Samsung and wanted to respond to some of the posts. We have seen problems with Windows Live Essentials interrupting the share folder connection. Haven't receive an explanation yet as to why yet. As an option, you can remove Windows Live Essentials (all components) but Samsung will be releasing a new firmware soon to accomodate the changes in Windows 7. The new firmware should be released within the next 30 days. You are welcome to email me to get direct support.

Win 7 uses SMB 2 by default.
What version of Win 7 and How is the scanner connected to Win 7 workstation?

Any updates? Did you resolve the issue?
What Samsung model are you referring to?

Homegruop may be an issue, I've 90% of my isntalls are in windows 7, only issue i had i had to create a new username and password, which defaults the profile.

I was pulling my hair out playing with settings with netbios, port forwarding, everything in theory shouldve worked, but the only thing i didnt play with before i created a new profile is homegroup,
