    Email #801 Errors only Canons

This one has been a tough one. I have a customer on a school campus that cannot get the Canon Imagerunners to scan to their Exchange server. This is their IT guy, who knows their network. I have verified that their IR5055 and 4570 both get the #801 error. They do not require authentication on the server.

The strange thing is, they have several Dell MFP's, and a Ricoh on the same network, that all worked out of the box, by just putting in the IP of the SMTP server, and an email address. One of the Dell's sits right next to the Canon, and I have verified it's settings are the same.

I have tried it with authentication as well, changing the port, changing the subject heading, etc, but still get the same error. I can ping the mail server from the Canons.

Any Ideas on what to try next.

Have you checked DNS Settings, Domain name? Maybe the Canons are on a VLAN. One way to troubleshoot this is to run a Wireshark trace and it will tell you why it is not working. One other thing to check is to ask the IT guy if he is using open relay for the MFP's that do work. Good luck!

Thank You for the reply. We have verified that the DNS and Domain settings are correct. I know it is a segmented network, But not sure if it's a VLAN or not. I will find out. One of the working Dell's sits right next to the IR, and is plugged into the same switch.

I've never used Wire shark, but I guess It is a skill I will need soon.

Get the IT guys to look at the Exchange side of things.

In particular, the fact if they have an open SMTP Relay Recieve connector. Read the following post I made a while ago that show you how to add an open SMTP Relay Recieve Connector for certain IP addresses:

          Thanks Owl,

I will forward that document to their IT Guy. I found out they are running Exchange Server 2008, and am not sure it the same info would still apply.

If you mean Exchange 2007 on Server 2008, then yes it will still be the same.

Another thing that I just remembered is that out of the box, Exchange 2007 and onwards requires email transmissions to be TLS enabled. This could also be your issue but would be solved with the use of that document anyway.

Today He told Me they are getting a quote on upgrading all their copiers, and we might just as well hold off on the troubleshooting.

I believe they are staying with us though....

remember to restart the MFP after you make changes also...they won't be active until you do.

They were power cycled several times through the testing phases.

Just an update, as I suspected, the new Ricoh copiers installed in the same spot, and on the same network scanned fine by simply entering the smtp server IP and admin email address his with no authentication needed.

                  This one is done.
