GDI really isn't a driver at all. When you use GDI you are bsically using Microsofts system to render graphics as opposed to the manufacturers software/ driver.
So your answer is no it is not just for USB, it can be used in conjunction with TCP/IP.
Back in the day when Di1611's were new, we had a lot of problems with the PCL board in the machines. What we did to get around that was to disconnect the PCL board and install the GDI drivers and print to the device via the network.
It exactly the same as printing to any other printer whereby you would setup a port for 9100 and print away.
Just like Blaze2000 mentioned, it is a Microsoft thing used for transmitting images to printers and monitors.
Now I also believe that the MS XPS drivers have now replaced GDI as far as printing is concerned with XML being the new standard.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.
Kyocera drivers have a checkbox buried somewhere to enable GDI printing. It's a useful feature when you've got a print document with various embedded images, and it's not coming out exactly the way you'd like. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
Unfortunately, there are network drivers for GDI printers. I have a few customers who made the poor choice of buying a CLJ 3600 for use as a network printer. It seems to depend on the operating system as to whether network drivers are supported.
