Re: Name of my smtp server

OK....thank you all for the responses....I dont have a network to practice on so I'm trying things out on my home computer. When I ping my e-mail provider it fails. I'm typing ping smtp.AOL.com It listes the ip its pinging to but fails all 4 times. Same when I try the samething using comcast.net, my other e-mail. Its not even about setting up scanning anymore, I want to know why I cant get a response for this basic action!

Most servers on the Web now don't reply to ping requests in order to avoid Denial Of Service type attacks, or just unnecessary traffic. DOS attacks used to involve flooding the server with ping requests. The ones that do reply are smart enough to detect the flood and avoid it. Since you got the IP instead of something like "destination host unreachable" that shows it is a good and valid host on the web. You can also setup most home routers and modems to not reply to ping requests as added security.

Thank you...that makes perfect sense. I'll quit bugging everyone about this and try and pick up some basic IT training before I get to old to learn it.

Thanks to Blazer1087 for asking the question and to all who responded with help. I browse Copytechnet for educational purposes even when I don't need help on a specific problem. This is a subject that I also was not familiar with. I may be oldrn but I still enjoy learning.

Thank you! I was not familiar with this. Tried it out with Google's DNS server 8.8.8.8 and it worked like a charm! Reps to you!

Glad the info was useful. And blazer don't worry about bothering anyone here, I think most here like being able to help. And I've learned a lot here too.

Blazer, and others, we buy all our tech starting down the network path, the book Networking for Dummies. It covers most of the Dummies questions, and gives a good background for the type of small business networks we run into. You will find, as you show up to setup the copier, that YOU are thier IT department.

Good idea, I will pick up a copy. I do ok on print set up. Almost all of my problems started when twain scanning was not used any more. Scan to e-mail seems to have to many variables for me to wade through. The worst one is when Authintication failure comes up. I never know where to start the troubleshoot process, and of course It becomes a tug of war between me saying its an IT problem and them saying its a copier set up problem.

Of course it is a copier setup problem. That's because IT haven't given you the info you need to setup the copier correctly!!!

Once you have done a few, it does start to become easier and every now and then, you will meet an IT person who doesn't mind showing you what they did to setup his / her end for the machine. These are the ones you will learn the most from.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

When should it be changed from default and what determines what to change it to?
                          FYI..Update port change

                          Action Taken:
On August 1, Comcast announced that we will no longer support the use of port 25 for sending email. Many older email clients (such as Outlook Express) default to using this port to send email. Please read this message to understand how this action may impact your ability to send email, and what you should do next.

                          Comcast Webmail Users:
If you use a web browser to access Xfinity Connect or other webmail service, this action will not affect your ability to send or receive e-mail.

Email Program Users (Outlook Express, Outlook, MacMail, etc.):
If you use an email program, this action will disable your program's ability to send email until you change your email program settings to send email on port 465.

I hope this doesnt mean that legacy MFPs currently in the field which do not have SSL capability and can only send thru port 25 are going to generate service calls??

That's true, but there are work arounds; there are posts here that may help with that.
