    POP before SMTP

    I did a scan to email setup on a KM-5050 that was a little different than most today. I can only take credit for obstinate persistence, and trying every possible combination of settings, but I'd like to understand what I did. Here is what I can recall.

    Scan to Email: On
    Port: 25
    SMTP Server: used IP address, hostname gave Send Error 1101 (server not available)
    Authentication: POP before SMTP
    Authentication type: POP3 User1
    POP before SMTP Timeout: 60 seconds
    APOP: Off

    POP3: On

    POP3 User1
    POP3 Server: same IP address, hostname gave Send Error 3101 (authentication)
    Port: 110
    Login Username: valid email address
    Login Password: users password

    Security
    SSL: On

    Senders Email: same valid email address, made up email fails, gave Send Error 3101 (authentication)

    DNS1:
    DNS2: Both verified with command: ipconfig/all

    What exactly is happening here? What's POP3? What's APOP? Usually a made-up sender's email address with a valid domain works fine, but not here (Send Error 3101). It's an off-site server, and takes most of 45 seconds to finish a single page, monochrome, Text, 300x300dpi transaction, that's why the timeout is set so high. Why the two different ports? Any idea why the SMTP hostname didn't work in either place?

    I'm just trying to expand my poor brain cells, not blow them apart. Simple explanation for a simple tech, please.

      Am no expert, but have dealt with this quite a bit.
      POP is for receiving and SMTP is for sending - hence the 2 different ports.
      You should have been able to use the hostname as long as DNS is correct. I usually set 1 internal and 1 external (internal is usually the server address or router address, external sometimes doesn't show in IPconfig)

      I see you used SSL = ON, so probably needs to be a different port than 25 - (usually port 465) - this may be where your 1101 error comes from and why you had to setup POP to authenticate
      Newer copiers also have TLS which is replacing SSL, and yet another port...

          I think I had a refurb install recently screw me up because pop before smtp was on.
