that's why I through it out there!! actually the DNS server resolves the IP to host name not the mfp.

Ok no worries. I don't know about Ricoh MFP's but the ones I work on can resolve host names (SMB-NetBEUI host names) locally without DNS, just like a PC can do. That being said the host names need to be in the same subnet, because a broadcast is sent out.

Oh but I see you said to print via a host name, so that's really up to the PC or server to resolve to an IP.

I agree. Host name is a NetBios/NetBEUI function and does not rely on DNS or even IP Address. I have used Host name at customers where I have had problems with customer changing their router and therefore subnet.

Sad thing is printer companies are now gradually starting to remove support and functionality for SMB/NetBEUI printing, due to it now being a legacy protocol and not many people using it. It's good for situations like you mentioned. But I suppose there is always WSD.

Anyway my apologies for going a tad off topic

...and depending on the OS used, NetBeui is by default off (can be switched on in tcp/ip settings-advanced-wins.
But as mentioned above, always try to print peer-to peer with your laptop connected straight to the mfp.
