    Sharp MXC300W SMB scanning

Hey guys, I got a funny issue with an MXC300W and network folder scanning to a windows 7 PC. Scanning was fine initially for approximately 6 months before the machine started throwing up a CE-02 error code (can't connect to server).

There are 2 PCs in the office connected for scanning purposes. One running Windows 8.1, the other (problem machine) is running Windows 7. As soon as a document is scanned to the W7 PC, it immediately codes CE-02. Both PCs are wirelessly connected to the router connecting them to the network.

More info: neither PC is running antivirus and windows firewall has been disabled. The Windows 7 PC can communicate with the printer as it is able to access the web browser pages and printing functions flawlessly. The W7 PC can also communicate with the W8.1 PC as it is able to read the scanned files from the 8.1 PC. I've attempted selecting different IP addresses and also allowing DHCP to take control. I've attempted a direct wired connection from the PC to the router to the MFP. Network discovery options are enabled in all fronts.

Firmware is the latest released version of 2.05 and SMTP scanning is not an option due to restrictions of the machine not supporting SSL and the province of Manitoba not having an ISP that allows access to port 25. The province's largest ISP has their mail set up through Windows Live now exacerbating problems.

If anyone has any clues that could help me it would be great. Both myself and Sharp Canada are stumped as to why this connection can't be made as everything logical that would prevent scanning access is set up acceptably.

I've given up bothering with SMB on windows machines. FTP is a far simpler protocol and I just stall FileZilla server on the client PC. In my mind, SMB is only any good in a server environment or at worst, with a NAS.

What kind of credentials are you using? Is this a domain network? A way that I've tried to troubleshoot these issues in the past is to plug my laptop into their network and try to access the same network folder through windows explorer. Try using both the IP address and the hostname of the PC you're connecting to. Hostname can be more reliable if DHCP is used. Open windows explorer on your laptop and type in the folder path (ie. \\pctoscanto\sharename\) You will most likely be prompted for credentials. I have never been able to successfully set up scan to SMB by using anonymous authentication.

SMB did recently have a bit of an update and various manufacturers had to release patches for their machines. I've given up on using SMB though unless it's a share hosted by a server or a NAS. For workstations I use FTP which is a far simpler protocol.

Just download FileZilla Server (freeware) and configure that. Very simple and easy to do. No need to disable the customers workstation firewalls either.

Credentials have been entered as well and it is not a domain network. Username is Parts and password is parts, my netbook was able to connect with their network as well, both by IP address and hostname and access the scans folder on both PCs. The computer is on a static IP and the scans folders are located on the root of the HDD as advised by Sharp.

Troubleshooting this issue with Sharp has hit a proverbial wall. They conclude that all settings are correct and scans should be going through, however it still continues to fail to the single PC; regardless of if it's wired or wireless, static IP or hostname, credentials supplied or left blank.

Presently it seems my only hope is for Sharp to put forward some custom firmware to support SSL and get email scanning working. I'm still very much appreciative of all assistance mustered.

I know it can be more trouble then what is worth, but have you considered running the Sharpdesk program and letting the network scanner tool set up your ftp port. " NO DON'T SHOOT DON'T SHOOT"

Sharpdesk was to be my final workaround. Presently have the shared folder on the 8.1 system set up to receive the scans and the W7 PC is reading the shared folder with a shortcut. It's almost the same but not quite; they just misunderstood me the first time I attempted to explain that to them.

Still can't get the W7 machine scanning appropriately.

I agree. OS updates, firewall updates or AV updates can easily break the SMB linkage. I much prefer to setup scan to e-mail unless it's just not efficient enough for a particular client.

If only MFP manufactures would develop a decent scan drivers/utilities that operated in a similar fashion to SMB or FTP and that was easy for the end users to install and manage. I'm sure some MFP manufactures have some decent scan drivers/utilities.

A scan utility/driver where the users could easily install, automatically creates a firewall acceptance rule (may need user intervention), communicates with the MFP and automatically creates an address on the MFP. Within the scan utility on the PC/Mac the end user could then tell the utility they wants their scans to automatically go into a specific folder.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

                      Re: Sharp MXC300W SMB scanning

Whenever I have problems like this, I enable the guest account.

First, open a run dialog by hitting windows key + R on the keyboard. Type "gpedit.msc" into the dialog, and run it. Go to Local Computer Policy->Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment and find "Deny Access to this computer from the network". Double click it, and if you see guest in the list, remove it. Next, go to "Allow Acess to this computer from the network" and make sure guest is listed. Close out of the group policy editor.

Open a run dialog again, this time type "control userpasswords2" into it. Run it, then go to the advanced tab. Click the Advanced button. Click the Users folder on the left. Find Guest, and double click it. Make sure that "Account is disabled" is unchecked. Close out of Local Users and Groups and user accounts.

Go to Start-Control Panel-Network and Sharing Center

Go to Change Advanced Sharing Settings over on the left. Make sure to turn off password protected sharing and use usernames and passwords to connect to other computers (SCREW HOMEGROUPS). Close out of the network and sharing center.

Next, find you scans folder and get the properties of it. Go to the Sharing tab, and then Advanced Sharing. Click Permissions. Make sure that Everyone has full control. Back out to the properties dialog, and then go to the Security Tab. Make sure everyone has full control there, as well.

Next, set the MFP to authenticate as guest with a blank password.

                      Hope this helps.
