    C3480 jams

I know I've had this before but don't remember what the fix was. I have a C3480 in the field, customer says when Tray 1 runs out of paper, it reads a jam instead of using paper from Tray 2. Does it have to do with the flag in the feed unit.....

If the tray runs out of paper but the coper still thinks there's paper in the tray it will jam as it will try & continue to feed paper when there is none!

Check the out of paper arm isn't broken or maybe it's just knocked out of position.

The flag was broken, so we replaced it. The copier still shows Tray 1 is full of paper even when empty, now it gives jam code 0101 which shows Cassette 1 Retry Sensor. Before we go out for a 3rd time, wanted to make sure there are no other suggestions.

If the flag was broken check it didn't knock the sensor out, check the tray is lifting & check the cassette size dial is set correctly.

I replace the complete feed unit if the copier has high millage

I also have had to replace the paper feed unit for that problem. After replacing the arm and ensuring the sensor was intact.

We have parts machines available. Saves time.

The thing is, the tray works fine until it runs out of paper, once the last sheet is taken the copier thinks it still has paper so tries to pull a sheet and throws jam code 0101.

Remove the pf unit, check the sensor or replace it, could be a trapped wire, these units are very basic, you can also swap units 1 & 2 around for testing etc
