    Canon IPF820 - won't print take two

    hey everybody

this machine runs up fine, loads paper fine, cleans print heads fine & shows no errors - but it just won't print anything, not nozzle tests or any other test print

press print (nozzle test) paper moves, print carriage comes out to align with the paper, paper aligns ready for print and print carriage sits there for ages, then moves to centre and sits, then moves back to paper right hand edge and paper progresses a little bit, then carriage returns to centre and waits, then back to paper right edge and paper progresses a little bit - rinse & repeat a few times, then the machine cuts off a blank piece of paper

no error codes, ink is fine, went into service mode to initialise everything, attempted a firmware update but it's already on the latest version

    video here:
    https://vimeo.com/237525276

    any ideas ??? anyone???? heeeeelp!

    thanks in advance

    What errors are stored? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

      There you go:

Remove the 2 tubes that come out from the purge unit (the ones that go into the waste ink container) from the joint "which is a white plastic" and have them taped into a bottle so you don't get dirty.

After that throw a couple of head cleaning - and check if there is ink coming into the bottle through the tubes.

If ink is coming through - than run a nozzle check again to see if ink is being printed on paper.

If ink is not coming through the tubes - it is time to check / replace the purge.

If ink is coming through the tubes but after trying nozzle check nothing is being printed - than replace "mainboard + printhead" and maybe carriage.

      Peace...

during print head cleaning ink is flowing fine - this is not a problem with the machine not ejecting ink, it's just not printing at all

did you watch the video? the print carriage should be going back n forth with the paper progressing each pass - if it did that and printed blank, that would be a different story

p.s. in the last year the machine has had the following replaced
          purge unit
          main controller assy
          encoder sensor unit
          encoder strip
          carriage belt
ink waste tube was cleaned in Feb this yr

            you already know my answer:

"mainboard + head" on the same time. If that doesn't do the trick replace carriage unit.

If financially that makes sense - this is the way to go.

            Peace..

Updating ipf firmware very easy, use L Printer Tool that you can get from the Canon website and also download ipf model firmware too, use USB cable to connect to printer.
I would recheck all ribbon cables on the boards that were replaced. Boot up in service mode, print a service nozzle print and see what happens, hopefully it will error and point you on the right direction.
They are a money pit when problems arise.
                Good luck

i attempted a firmware update using canons "firmware update tool ver.3.4", but it is already on the latest version, so the update program didn't do anything - didn't see any L Printer Tool or a direct download link for the actual firmware,,, perhaps you can point me in the right direction

did a nozzle test print in service mode, did the same thing and no errors

Did the LCD screen of ipf say upgrading or updating firmware? It will reboot upon completion. The newest firmware v1.11 for ipf 820 listed above the firmware update tool on Canon site under support.
If you remove the printhead and then power up do you get the message to install print head??
Sorry I'm all over the place.

no the machine didn't say updating, because the machine is already updated to ver1.11 - the FUT saw that the machine already had the latest version and did nothing

the firmware update tool has the latest firmware embedded, but it won't update because the machine is already on the latest version

                      not removed the print head

i found the firmware V1.11 but not the L Printer Tool - saw a thread on here about L Printer Tool, but no joy

Canon changed the name of the program to upgrade, so you did good. Try without the printhead. Interested in seeing how that goes for you.

i found a program which will help me to downgrade the firmware (Encad File Print Utility) and i also found firmware V.1.09 - so i'll pop back out there, downgrade the firmware, try without the print head, update the firmware again n see what i see

i'll also check controller connectors and make sure the PSU is outputting correct voltages

thanks for the pointers kind Sir

As stated earlier...but you don't wanna hear it. Printhead AND Main controller. I've seen fried printheads eat main controllers right when you install them. Good luck..
