      I like how you think. I am curious though if the procedure Teckat just detailed in the service mode has any chance of saving this HD? Curious about your experiences with this situation and if it is inevitable, or just the Boyscout motto (which I live by). If so, how much longer do these HDs normally last before a complete unrecoverable failure? Thank you.

          Can't say how much longer you will have with that HDD.

          Chances are its firmware, which E602-0003 pertains too.
          A defrag can fix up sectors on the HDD.
          But after the defrag the procedure is to reload firmware,
          that's why it goes into download mode afterwards.

          We can ignore the reloading of firmware after the defrag.
          I guess in your case you can try to reload firmware first,but be wise and just prepare yourself.
          That's the best advice I can give ya.
