Canon iPF780 - M40 Scanner no interpolation option & calibration

First off, I am putting there here because I think it will get more exposure than in the fax/printer section (feel free to scold me if I have crossed the line).

The Smart Works software will only scan up to 1200dpi (probably strictly optical) instead of the max resolution of 9600dpi (interpolated) which means to me that the software is missing the interpolation bits. Additionally, the 1200dpi mode needs to be enabled in settings each time SmartWorks is restarted (slightly annoying). Regarding 9600 dpi, yes there are almost no instances when this is necessary, but I have a 20(+) year old fax machine that can achieve this spec in mono (like watching grass grow), but 2400dpi does have a place. Anyone got any clues on the interpolation option (or the lack thereof)?

Also, this of lesser concern because the scanner works just fine: The documentation literally has only images on how to run the calibration sheet. Is it supposed to be placed to the left side, right side, eyeball it in the middle...or does it matter? Also does it need to be inserted perfectly straight? It seems to complete the calibration regardless. Sorry if that is a dumb question, but I never have dealt with large format scanners and do not know the theory of operation here.

And a bit of a rant:
This is how this system works - as explained to me. The M40 scanner can scan up to 9600dpi (interpolated - verified by the brochure) The M40 scanner is actually significantly more expensive as a standalone unit, but Cannon packages the printer and scanner as a pair to influence sales. The SmartWorks software renders the scanner unusable without the printer - printer works almost like a dongle. (Again, this is what was told to me.) Logic dictates that this scanner can technically operate with with the proper software/driver as a standalone unit. This notion somewhat substantiated as the calibration will run with the printer off. Is this possible or am I nuts?

No one knows how to get scans higher than 1200dpi?

Or clear directions for using the calibration sheet scanning (with words instead of pictures)?

Firstly: I was not aware of scanner specs, so it has literally never come up, this "9600 interpolated scanning". It is fully possible that SmartWorks software is unable to use the scanner to it's fullest capabilities. This scanner is used on a lot of different devices, including being sold separately.

Secondly: If I remember correctly, I removed the original guides, and inserted the calibration page aligned at the right edge arrow. It took a couple tries to get the sheet exactly aligned at the mark. And yes it must be perfectly straight.

Thirdly: You probably are nuts ... just not about this. Sorry I didn't notice your post earlier. =^..^=

EDIT: These are my notes from the last scanner calibration:
Run scanner calibration: Minimize User Interface > double-click SmartLF M Utilities on the desktop > select Calibrate > insert scanner calibration pattern black edge first (arrows pointing toward scanner), right edge aligned with silkscreened index > calibrates for 180 seconds > OK.

The brochure shows maximum resolution at 9600dpi, see here: Canon U.S.A., Inc. | imagePROGRAF iPF785 MFP M40

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

That is what I was thinking too, hence my rant.

Thanks, I had it "calibrate" several different ways (even intentionally slightly crooked) so I wasn't sure what it was actually trying to measure/compare in the process. I will redo it with your notes in mind.

        Haha!
Thanks for notes and taking time to respond!
