    Canon IR2200 and Windows Firewall

I have users who get the following message when printing to a Canon IR2200 with the Windows XP Firewall enabled from apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Reader, etc.

    "Unable to Obtain Device Information"

If I disable the Windows Firewall or add these apps to the exception list when the Firewall is enabled then the jobs go through without the message.

Is this the way this copier is suppose to function or do I have something configured incorrectly?

I have other copier/printers networked and have never had to add generic apps to the exception list to make them print.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

download the driver from canon site do a full install best to let driver find and install take no shortcuts after its done should work.... as a copier tech we find IT people have a way of short cutting the install and get device status does not work!!!

Can I ask if the machine is set up with a static IP address or dynamic?

We always set them up with static and have never had this problem, so am thinking it might be because Windows has to find the machine each time the user tries to print to it, so in effect reinstalling the thing each time it's used?!?

If using WINS on printer in IP config, it will be problem sooner or later is my experience.

when running full setup from the disk, make sure that you install canon driver information assist services this will allow bidirectional communication with the printer. without it you will get this message.

Read all the above again as there is a bit of good suggestions. When I get a "problem" installation I first make sure I uninstall the "bad" printer. Then I turn off the firewall. Do a full clean driver install (it should now be found). Turn firewall back on. Works for me - your milage may vary.

The IR2200 is installed on a print server (Windows 2000 Server) and shared out over the network. The drivers where downloaded from the canon site and a full install was done with access to the vista, XP and 2000 drivers at the desktop.

The server has a static ip address but the windows xp machine that are connecting to it over the network are using dhcp.

It is not happening on all workstations, but sporadically happening over the network.

The canon driver information assist service is installed on the print server and is started. Does anyone know if this bi-directiional service is using a specific port?

WINS is not in play on the printer or assigned on the workstations.

When first configured, you should have let the driver install program search for the device (hopefully has a static address). If it did not find the printer - turn off the firewall and search again. Once the driver is installed, you may turn the firewall back on and it should work.

Perhaps in the original installation rather than using the setup program someone used Add Printer and added a local port.
