I experienced that copying the firmware from one USB to another does work. I did just that a few days ago and it worked fine. Of course I made the original USB using SST.
I read what you said (that it would not work), but wanted to just try anyways, and it did work. Maybe it doesn't work with certain machines or something. I was doing IR ADV C5051, IR ADV C5255, IR ADV C5560 and IR ADV DX C5760.
Advance series 20xx,40xx,50xx,60xx etc with old firmware!!
You can no longer update through the panel (cds). Also e-maintenance is no longer supported. The only solution is upgrading with usb or sst.
P.S
You can't send the firmware remotely because you need sst to load the program on the key. Even a copy of the firmware to another usb key doesn't work.
