Canon IR 2880 Won't print from IMAC

Hi...I'm working on an IMAC with OS 10.5.5 and trying to print to the Canon IR 2880. I installed the software/drivers. Everything was successful. The computer finds the printer. However, it doesn't print. The printer makes a noise like it's gearing up to print then beeps with an error code that simply says "NG" The print log on the printer shows the file name of the item to be printed, the computer name, but still doesn't print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several different ways, including using appletalk, local network and IPP/sharing with a pc running windows xp. Same result...the file gets to the printer...but doesn't print.

Has anyone else had problems hooking a mac to the IR 2880? This has me baffled...Apple walked me through everything I needed to do to correctly install the printer. Canon on the other hand hasn't been helpful at all. They immediately tell me it's the computer's problem and give me no information. I did download the new driver from their web site, but it didn't help.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!!!

Which mac driver are you using, PS,PCL,UFR. Do you have a printer kit installed.

I am using the UFR driver, and yes there is a printer kit installed.

You're trying to print to paper and not print to fax, right? If I'm not mistaken, the "NG" error code indicates a non-successful fax attempt. Just a hunch but it sounds like the printer thinks you're trying to use it to send the document as a fax. Sounds like the problem is with the setup of the 2880 and not your Mac.

I've got a Canon LaserClass 730i that has given me a few headaches. To my dismay, the 730i has no Mac drivers for it.

Is Job Accounting turned on in the copier? I have seen printing issues caused by this, the copier is expecting a user id and password, but the driver, since it was not set up correctly, never prompts for the id stuff. The file gets transmitted, you can see the data processing light blink, and then nothing happens. The print job goes to the bit bucket. I believe the button for thst is on the Device Status tab.

Yes, the iRC2880 UFR II print driver (the Mac version) works on an iMac - just the way the manual said. Is it possible that you are using the version of UFR II?

I know that there is a patch you need to obtain if you're trying to install the driver on Version 10.5 of Leopard.

Some of the 80 series came without the PS option. Option is the operative word. You can upgrade. Fought a 5180/Mac issue. Check device config on counter screen to check for PS option. This Mac would print pcl from XP on VM but no native Mac PS. Never printed UFR and will not ever print PCL. Mac ppd files for PS only. Leopard 10.5.6

                  Don't understand your post jtecks

Canon IR2880i, Macbook Pro Intel, Mac OS 10.5.6

I've tried Canon PS driver v2.11 and UFR2 driver v1.70 as per this Apple post <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1676341&tstart=84> without success. Only an older G4 can print to the printer on the network all the new intel machines can not.

"Check device config on counter screen to check for PS option."

I'm sorry but where is this screen? I went thru every option on the thing and don't see a Counter or a PS option? My counter page that I access via the printer's IP address just has page print totals and no options for PS or not.

We are about ready to toss this $8000 printer in the ocean and get something that works with Intel Macs - any suggestions?

                  Thanks.

I understand your frustration, I, as a service tech, am often tempted by that same impulse,, except the ocean is too far from Iowa. The screen being referred to is accessed by pressing the Copy Counter button on the operators panel. At the bottom of the screen when you are viewing the counters, there is a button to "view installed options" or some such phrase. I don't have a machine in front of me at the moment to give you the exact wording. That is where you can get version info as a user.

                      Operators Panel?

If by operators panel you mean "Additional Functions" there is no counter button.

                      I have the following options:

                      common settings
                      timer settings
                      adjustment/cleaning
                      report settings
                      system settings
                      copy settings
                      communication settings
                      mail box settings
                      printer settings
                      address book settings

in system settings->dept id management->page totals, I can see the number of copies done but nothing else

there is no counter - i've been thru every single menu for the past 2 hours searching for the item.

our invoice does not indicate we purchased the "postscript" option so I presume that this is my problem with the newer intel macs. Can this be easily added to make the problem go away? Our canon supplier knows nothing about macs.

Also is there a way to use the scanner on macs?

It is a physical button on the operator control panel, it is not a mode under the additional function button. I don't have an operators manual to give you the specific name of the button, (it changes slightly from model to model), but there are only 20 or so physical button on the op panel, it is counter check, or some such name. When that screen opens up, at the bottom are the touch sensitive buttons I referred to in the last message. Again the exact wording does not come to me, but I believe it is Status of Installed Options or some such name.

{PS Printer Kit-Q1 (Requires PCL Printer Kit-Q1) 1462B001AA} is already installed if this is an "i" model, as in iRC2880i. I know very little about Mac printing, just that they require postscript printing, because that is all they will do. When you have found this installed option information, it will state what version of the installed print protocols are loaded on the copier.

You can install the PostScript printer PPD files on your MAC OS X computer, using the Installer. The PPD files will be installed in 'en.lproj' under Startup disk/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources.
                          * Note- The administrator name and password are required for installation.
Use the following procedure to install the PPD files:
                          1. Double-click the disk image file having the dmg extension that bears the name of your controller product.
                          2. Double-click the virtual disk icon mounted on the desktop, and then double-click the file having the pkg extension.
                          3. The dialog box appears for authentication. Click the lock icon on the lower left corner.
                          4. Enter the Administrator name and password and click OK.
                          5. In the introduction window, read the instructions and click Continue to proceed.
                          6. In the Software License Agreement window, read the contents and click Continue and then Agree.
                          7. In the Select a Destination window, select the volume on which MAC OS X is installed as the PPD file destination and click OK.
                          8. In the Installation Type window, click Install. Copying of the PPD files begins.
                          9. When copying is complete, click Close in the Finishing Up window.

                          10.Some macs require a restart.

                          And for the Scanning ?,
You can use the send feature, this is a i model.

Thanks there is a physical button and there is no postscript installed - can I just buy and install this then or is the printer no longer useable ? Why does it work fine with non-intel macs if macs only do postscript printing?

                              PPD

"You can install the PostScript printer PPD files on your MAC OS X computer, using the Installer."

Can you elaborate on where I get the "Installer" ?

I have hundreds of files in the "en.lproj" folder - am I looking for something in particular here?

The closest guess I can find for the ir2880i is a file called "CNMCIR2830SSP.ppd.gz"

Can you confirm that installing the PPD will allow INTEL MACS to use the printer? I already can print from NON Intel macs (of which there is only one left on our network so that we can print in our office by sending the file to the printer, and then physically going to the printer and printing from there.... very annoying).
