[Misc] Canon iPF760 plotter - "paper is crooked"

Hi all. I've tried searching for this, but all I get is random results including the word "crooked", so I think I'm doing something wrong. lol
There's also no actual error code, so the service and user manuals aren't much help.

Anyway, I recently picked up a Canon iPF760 plotter than I'm hoping to refurb and use in my office. When I try to load paper, it pops up "paper is crooked. Push the release lever back, then align paper with orange line". Okay, no biggie, it just needs to be realigned because it shifted in transport or something, right? Well, I've tried loading/unloading/reloading multiple times, and I get the same msg each time. I'm thinking maybe a dirty or faulty sensor somewhere?
I also thought may the roll wasn't properly loaded on the roll feed spindle, but not being super familiar with Canon plotters, I can't say for sure. It 'looks' right, for whatever that's worth.
Any ideas where to go from here?

Two possibilities that I can think of:

    1) The oriface for the media sensor may be built up with ink and/or paper lint, making a fuzzy gunk that light will not pass through.
    2) The paper roll may be imperfectly wrapped so that the right edge of the paper varies too much. Usually you'll see wrinkles in that case.

    =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Those were both sorta along the lines of what I was thinking. I haven't had time to dog into it much, but I figured I better check with the experts here first, in case it was something known/obvious that would save me a bunch of wasted diagnostic time. Oh well, time to break out the air duster and tweezers and start hunting dust bunnies.
By the way, is this the right place to be asking about this machine? I could have sworn there used to be a large format subforum here. Did I imagine that?

There has been some internal discussion recently of creating a new wide format forum, but so far it has not come to anything.

This is as good a place as any.

Bring along plenty of alcohol, towels, and cotton swabs.
Keep an eye out for jams 03010000-200C, 03060100-2E02, and errors 03010000-2E27, 03130031-2F32, 03130031-260E

To enter Service Mode: hold Load & Navigate while powering On. "S" appears in the upper right of the screen.
Gap Calibration: Service > right arrow x2 to Adjust > down arrow x1 > right arrow x3 to Gap Calib > down arrow x1 to NO > right arrow x1 to YES > OK (successful result "Check End")
Optical Axis: (load sheet A2 sized full gloss media, LEF, 16.54" x 23.39") > Settings > OK > Service Menu > OK > right arrow x2 to Adjust > down arrow to Print Pattern > down arrow x1 > right arrow x1 to Optical Axis > OK (successful result "Lightly tap paper. Press release lever to remove paper.").
Optical Sensor Output: Settings > OK > Service Menu > OK > right arrow x3 to Function > down arrow x1 to CR UNLOCK > right arrow x8 to OPT SENS OUTPUT > down arrow to =NO > right arrow to YES > OK "=YES" > right arrow to browse outputs. If you write down the outputs, I can help diagnose the results.

I feel like this is super useful information, I just don't know what to do with it yet!
