You can't, you can use a USB stick but no matter what you would need to use the SST. That's like asking your car to drive without gas.

The car can go without gasoline, but only under the mountain!

Another way is to clone HDD via HDDClone.

ir5000/ir5020i/ir7200 does not have this option, it doesn't support USB.

                        How is this possible! explain..
If you have some sort of external device that duplicates HDD's
The HDD connect right to the main controller on most or all newer models.
You will have to have the right hardware (compatibility).
Its not a bad idea to clone HDD's, But to ask how can it be done without the SST, this is the only program that I know that works when upgrading Canon copiers, it will always stay in the picture, unless Canon finds a newer way.

I'm sorry, I did not give an exact explanation, English is not my native language.
I use SST to prepare system for USB Memory Stick.
Then I make an image from USB MS.
When the customer has problems with the copier HDD or need local language.
You send them the image USB, is nothing more (SST, SM etc)
Customer restore the image to USB, swich ON copier with "28" in SAFE MODE, then makes the upgrade itself.
                          It's works really!
