Setup second-hand Canon imageRUNNER for printing/scanning/copying

    Dear forum participants,

I got a second-hand Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5030i from a company that used it in combination with a smart card reader to allow employees to print only their documents.

Now I want to use this printer/copier/scanner for private use (for simple printing/scanning/copying) at a social association.

When I start the device, I only see the attached "Not Activated" message (in the Universal Login Manager screen).

    - I already retrieved a license key/license file from Canon - RDMS - by entering the serial number and activation keys, but I'm not able to find out what to do with this file/number.
    - I already went into the Service Mode by hitting [Additional Functions-2 and 8-Additional Functions].
    - I tried printing a test page (as the IP address might show up there, which I might use to get into the Remote UI) as described in Print color test page from service mode on Canon IR Advance C5030 / C5035 / C5045 / C5051 - YouTube , but nothing is printed when I press the green button (even though the printer shows status READY).
    - I tried pressing the 123 button, but the IP address isn't shown there (which I might use to get into the Remote UI).
    - The following is not available, because nothing happens when I press the Settings/Registration button: (Settings/Registration) → [Preferences] → [Display Settings] → [IP Address Display Settings] (source: Displaying the IP Address ).
    - I tried to delete password settings as described in Just a moment... , but that didn't change anything.
    - I tried finding out the IP address of the printer by connecting it to a laptop using a LAN cable and typing arp -a and ipconfig in the command prompt, but I wasn't able to find the IP address of the printer there (which I might use to get into the Remote UI).

Do you have advice on what I could do to be able to use this printer for printing/scanning/copying?

Thank you very much in advance for any advice!

Where can I find this option to reinstall the firmware and reset all settings? I connected the printer to my laptop with a LAN cable, but till now I haven't been able to find the IP address to access the remote UI.

Ok so firstly that login screen is Uniflow this is additional software the previous owner had installed. This won't work unless you have Uniflow installed on your server & a licence for it.

So you need to uninstall this first then you can reset the machine back to factory default & start a fresh installation.

        Uninstalling Applications

Also the spanner in the bottom left of the screen shows you have an error code, you will also need to address this. If you enter service mode, under display tab, check the error history.

          Hi,
first of all, the machine is having an error code, to approach this, you need to enter the service mode , then check the error list for the code,
Also to clear the ULM, from service mode you can clear it.

Do you have suggestions how I can access the Remote UI ( Overview of This Function )? Should it be enough to simply connect the printer to my laptop with a LAN cable? Or do I obligatorily need to place a router between the printer and my laptop? And does this router need to have an internet connection or can I do it without an internet connection?
I previously tried to simply connect my laptop to the printer with a LAN cable, but wasn't able to figure out how to find the correct IP address.

Hello, it would be easier to call the person who sold you the printer to give you the access code, or as the friend says, enter service mode and delete the option. Once that is done, it will no longer ask you to enter the password.

Re: Setup second-hand Canon imageRUNNER for printing/scanning/copying

Put the device into service mode:

Press the yellow clear button to clear any old button presses
Then press the button that looks like a head with an asterisk in it "starhead"
Then press 2 and 8 at the same time
                Then press starhead again

You should now be in service mode

                Mode list>Copier>option>user

Look for a setting called MEAPSAFE, change the 0 value next to it to a 1. Press OK, then reboot the device using the rocker switch on the control panel.

That will switch off the login manager software.

You can repeat the steps and put the 1 back to a 0 to get rid of the MEAPSAFE message on the screen - don't worry the login manager software won't switch back on when you do this.

It looks like the device also has an active error on it "contact service representative" message....could be faulty.

Thank you, Canon Fixer and wcanonw for your help!

Canon Fixer, your proposed solution worked! Thank you!

For persons who will have the same problem in the future, I'll add a description of the solution here:

Press the yellow clear button to clear any old button presses
Then press the button that looks like a head with an asterisk in it "starhead"
Then press 2 and 8 at the same time
                  Then press starhead again
                  Choose <Mode list>
Then press the starhead button again
Then press the starhead button again
Then press 2 to switch from level 1 to level 2
                  Choose <Copier>
                  Choose <Option>
                  Choose <User>
Look for a setting called MEAPSAFE (for me it was located on page 3 out of 8), change the 0 value next to it to a 1.
                  Press OK
Then reboot the device using the rocker switch (main on/off switch) on the control panel (for me this button was on the outside on the right of the printer).
Repeat the steps and put the 1 back to a 0 to get rid of the MEAPSAFE message on the screen - don't worry the login manager software won't switch back on when you do this.

Now I get an error 'E000020-0081'.
                  I checked the P-SENS-P option in the service mode under Level2 --> Copier --> Display --> DENS --> P-SENS-P.
This P-SENS-P option shows 245, which seems too low.
So I might need to clean the 'patch read sensor'.
I attached photos of the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5030i.

Do you maybe have a suggestion where I can find this
'patch read sensor', such that I could clean it?

Most likely the patch sensor shutter had become dislodged or stuck blocking the sensor.

Thank you, Copier Tech! Do you know where I can find this patch sensor and the patch sensor shutter? Is it vissible on the photos that I added? Or do you know whether there exists a description of how to reach it? Thank you for any suggestions!

I found a description in the service manual. I will try this out soon.

I would assume that this is the patch sensor (protected by the shutter). Is that correct?

patch sensor shutter might have broken when moving the machine. It happened to me and I didn't beat it up. Actually repaired it and put it to use somewhere else.
I have used Canon Imagerunner parts for sale. Most are floor model Color and / Advances Imagerunner with some 3025 3235 parts. Several intact machines being parted.

                              Thanks for all the advice!

I tried cleaning the patch sensor. Though, I wasn't able to understand what is the 'patch sensor shutter', so I wasn't able to push the 'patch sensor shutter' while I was cleaning the patch sensor.
The description from the documentation (screenshot attached below) wasn't clear enough for me to understand which part is the 'patch sensor shutter'.
After my attempt to cleaning the patch sensor the 'E000020-0081' error was resolved. Also the P-SENS-P value (in the service mode under Level2 --> Copier --> Display --> DENS --> P-SENS-P) is much better now: somewhere between 500 and 700.
I also made a test print (photo attached below), but that is far from perfect yet.
I also checked what the machine shows about the toners (photo attached below).

Does somebody have a better explanation of what the 'patch sensor shutter' is?
Does somebody have advice how I could improve the print quality (especially the black color) of the test print?
