np6551 would have potential control. Usually if it is on, copies come out light when wires are worn. However, the opposite can happen when it is off. Try checking potential control, if it is off, activate it. If copies come out lighter, change primary, xfer wires. Leave potential cont on.
Good luck!Comment

i would also look at the drum cleaning blade. when they go bad they can cause similar copy quality issues.Comment

Are you an end user? or a tech? The primary sets the charge to attract toner not like the digital machines where the primary sets a clean charge. I would more likely suspect the cleaning lamps or the mirrors. When was the last time you had a good cleaning and PM done on this? It could be a cleaning blade issue also. If the fixing unit is badly worn you could be getting offsetting from the rollers. some additional info would help. if you are a tech shut off pot cont and see if there is a change. Stop the page (after a few have come out dirty) before the fixing unit and see if it is dirty at that point. If it is then you can rule out the fixing assembly. If it is clean you can rule out the image formation. Is the glass half full or half empty? I say neither. The glass is obviously full, full of potential. The potential to hold more water or the potential to quench a thirst. Life is all about how you see it.Comment

thanks for your replies...yes the copies comes out dirty after passing the drum assembly and not after the fixing unit...but to tell you the truth this will be the first time im going to check the drum assembly and i have no idea how to do it?except that i think ill have to remove the developing unit first before proceeding to the drum unit itself?am i correct???can the cleaning lamp be removed without removing the drum assembly?is it complicated to removed..is it the same way as removing the drum unit of IR 105?can you please give hints..Comment

That's an old machine, I don't see many of them any more, but I do remember it is similar to the 105. I think you can remove the cleaning lamp without taking out the drum unit. It is attached to the drum unit, but I think there is one screw on the front to the left of the primary and the unit slides out. But I think removing the drum assembly is a good idea so you can look at it and clean it. You should see the blank lamps and the cleaning lamp come on when it runs. Tough to troubleshoot a copy quality issue over the internetI would cetainly start with a cleaning including new corona wires and clean the optics. I would also check to make sure there is no paper in the drum/cleaning unit.
