    IR5570 limited functions

Wonder if anybody's had this. Customer had 4 E540 codes after which the copier doesn't recognize the whole finisher. It sees it but only ejects paper out tray B, doesn't have the option to staple and won't offset collate. Bins do not move or reference at all. It shows the finisher in service mode but almost seems it only acts as an exit tray. Message on display says finisher cannot be used and on top says "ready to copy (functions limited)". Customer also lost ability to print from computer. Without any further diagnostics, I'm thinking finisher controller. Thanks in advance

    Go into additional functions,
Check common settings, look for limited function mode and turn it off then reboot.

Look for the cause of the 540... usually the customer has placed a garbage can or a box under the finisher

In our cases, the 540 was the tray 1 motor. 542 was bottom tray motor OR TRASH CAN/BOX OF PAPER. No idea why, but we had 2 systems go through both motors 1 time each. Bad batch of motors? Other ones (maybe 9) no problems.

SWAG - if the printer is set for tray 1, that would explain why it is not working at all. Redirect printer output to the top.

I suspected something under the bins but found no evidence. I'll check on Screwtapes idea. Thanks. At this point, the only output is tray B. They have fax installed and customer said faxes used to come out on tray A and now come out on B even though the tray designation says A. Thanks for the advice, I will repost.

Under the upper tray is a micro switch. There is a plastic cover that can flex and if the bottom tray gets too close and the upper tray doesn't move it will hit the plastic cover into the micro switch. This will stop tray movement and cause a limited function to arise. The plastic cover can flex and get caught on the switch and it won't clear until you unhook the cover. I think it is called the near switch and it will drive you nuts until you realize it is there. I hope it is that simple, but I have found it is usually the tray motor. Replace it if the switch is ok and you should be good to go.
Is the glass half full or half empty? I say neither. The glass is obviously full, full of potential. The potential to hold more water or the potential to quench a thirst. Life is all about how you see it.

I've had this happen on two occasions. Good pointer 20.

I switched upper and lower tray motors and get an E542 which is lower tray shift problem now so I have ordered a new motor and that should take care of it. If not, I'll be back.

May want to order 2 motors as I learned that on the units where one motor failed - the other followed shortly there after.

Did you check for the initial error code that cause the issue, and what was it.

You swapped motors. Since you swapped motors, and now the lower tray is giving a E542 now. The question I must next ask. So, before you swapped the motors, was the upper tray working? You should have in error history a E540, if the upper tray did not hit home position. Do you have a E540 in error history?

Also check flags, make sure there swinging freely and not stuck or broken. One other thing. When the trays go up and down as when the machine is turned on, pay attention closely to the trays, as they should hit the flag arms when they go up and down. They must hit or tap those flag arms when the machine is turned on. You can also get those error codes.

                        Good luck.

The original code was E540-8004, upper tray shift motor. After switching motors I get E542-8004, lower tray shift motor. I hope I'm right. This is a sub contract call and I just want to get it done.

It pretty much sounds like you are the right track.
