    CLC-3220 C1 - Error Code: E020-04C0

    Hi Guys,

I kindly ask foryour help: two weeks ago I had installed a new black drum in my machine, the other drums are still ok and below 100% of the max. usage. This new one (black) is now at 8% and comes up today with the above metioned error. Can you please tell me what it means and what I could do to bring my machine to work again?

This error occurs only partwise. The machine prints several papers in good quality and then suddenly it stops. So I think, that the suggestion to change the drum is not the way to stop the error.

Do you know how to check the ATR-sensor or how to clean it?

What I have done already: I cleaned the salt sensor and put the drum in and out several times. The black toner is still the same.

    I'm looking forward to hearing from you a. s. a. p.

    Thanks a lot,

    Andreas

Hello an thanks for your reply Marc,

I also tried it before posting here, the error doesn`t appear but the printed paper had grey lines in the background and to clean the black drum did not help to solve the problem, so I bought a new one.

Toner looks ok and has no mechanical problems.

Update: I found maybe something in the service mode:

The density in the concentration for the black drum is over 7% (DENS-K) the other parts are near 0%.

The other thing is, WINDOW-Y;M;C;K are at 0, so the ATR-Sensor of the black drum has maybe a problem, SALT-Sensor should be ok, because with the elder black drum there appear some values.

Can I solve this problem by myself ? I don't have a hope for guarantee, after 8% of the usage of the drum.

Does it help to change the ATR-Sensor with the one from the elder drum ?

    Best regards,
    Andreas

These things happen sometime. I've had drums that were bad upon installing machines.
I would remove the drum promptly, this can lead to more problems. All i could say is to replace the drum.

make 20 color copies to force the ATR sensor to take readings. Then compare the SGNL reading for the color that is generating the error and additional colors in Service Mode; COPIER>DISPLAY>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M/K with the Initialization setting in COPIER>ADJUST>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M/K.
COPIER>DISPLAY>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M/K arethe ATR Sensor readings of the Developer in its present condition and should be within +/- 50 of the Initialization settings.

COPIER>ADJUST>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M/K arethe Initialization settings that the copier maintains and are located on the door sheet.

If the Initialization setting is not the same as the door sheet, be sure to enter the correct value and replace the Developer Unit.

If the ATR Sensor reading is over +/-50 of the Initialization setting; the ATR Sensor, Patch Detection Sensors, Drum Unit and DC Controller are suspect.

Check the status of the Drum Unit under COPIER>COUNTER>DRBL-1>PT-DRM. The Patch Detection Sensors looks at patches of toner that are generated on the drum for each color and determines the amount of toner that is in each patch by the amount of reflected light. If the drum is not creating these patches correctly, the patch readings will be affected. Replace the Drum Unit if it is close to or over 100% of its rated life.
If the Drum Unit is not close to or over its rated life, replace the ATR Sensor and Patch Detection Sensors. If the error continues replace the DC Controller.

If over toning continues to occur the Developing Clutch (CL1) may be sticking and need to be replaced.

          sorry for my late responce,

          @SCREWTAPE:

I bought a new drum, no errors in the last two days. I hope for more usage this time, over 9% of the drum life were desirable

          @teckat:

I spent many hours trying to solve the problem, SGNL readings were once 0, after another restart about 60, the DENS readings were still the same, C M Y: 0% +/- 0.2 - K: over 7%.

These two orders are not available in the service mode:
          COPIER>ADJUST>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M/K
          COPIER>COUNTER>DRBL-1>PT-DRM
I think, I have got an elder version installed (ex. Boot-Rom: Ver. 70.01c).

Does anybody know the current version for CLC 3220 - C1?

          Thx

what ver system software ???? >>> it should be v90.03

???> did u ever replace the old swing gear assembly- It drives the ITB Unit. It is now called Swing Plate Unit. Worn and stripped gears can cause intermittent e020 codes/ and j 0107 codes.

The 42t A gear can be replaced/ but if other gears are worn/or damaged u need new unit, because other B gear is now pressed on to unit. The ITB unit needs to move in a timed manor other wise it throws off all signals from laser (e020's) & jam codes/delay & stationary.
            new A gear=FU7 0403-000
new plate= with that pressed B gear=FM3 3775-000>>>>>>>>>>IT IS A PAIN TO CHANGE

I agree with Teckat that the swing gear set is not easy to change, but well worth the trouble. I advise that you replace all 3 gears in that area, to avoid having to do it again.

              FM3-3775-000 1 SWING PLATE UNIT
              FU7-0403-000 1 GEAR
              FU3-0266-040 1 GEAR /C3200

I did one this week and the gear in the swing plate unit that is directly mounted to the drive shaft is difficult to line up with the pin in the shaft,, perseverance will win at some point!

This is the latest I find.

As for drum life. Canon bases drum life by 5% ratio of coverage. The more coverage on a sheet the less life you get out of the drums.
