For starters you can check your transfer separation corona ass'y.
There's really no trick to pulling out the Ap-kit, just the right way.
Do you have somewhat knowledge of this machine??

Just replace the transfer sep corona.
Its like four screws to pull out the drum.
There one that holds the drum and three sliver screws.
You must take out the developing assy first which is one screw and remove the plate then pull it out.
So the total is like five screws.

What about potential control, are you familiar with this function?

We have had a couple of these with very faint copies. The VD and VL were good and drum pot was 680ish. It seemed to be related to the developer. We pulled out the developer and vacuumed it off, cleaned all the contacts and wiped the developer cyc clean with a dry towel. Doing a Dc-Con clear brought it back somewhat, but we had to replace the dev cyc on the other one. Service mode-> copier-> function -> clear-> DC-Con.

Good call about taking out the developer 1st and the one big screw that holds the drum.

Turn off potential control in service mode and see if it makes a difference. I have seen the potential control harness wires get squished. No errors? Try reseating the laser assembly...this was a known problem on this family of machines...Canon modified the mounting brqackets actually. Also make sure that the primary duct cover is not broken....the actuator for the laser shutter is part of the assembly. I know,..on this machine laser erases background so unopen shutter should cause dark copies but i have seen cases where it interferes just enough to mess up VD and VL during potential control. CYA...rewire all the coronas as a start...only takes 15 min.
