Are you using the Service tool software?

If the machine is dead you have to use the parrellel cable. Hold down the 2 and 8 at power on and machine will go into download mode.

If the machine is alive you can go into service mode and download over the ip address with a crossover Ethernet cable. Much faster.

timeout messages/ usually mean poor cable connections / or an SST issue/ u can also try to uninstall/re install SST but>
make sure u have only version of SST on laptop.
also make sure u are using ir3300I firmware and not the ir3300

Are you using the IEEE1284 parallel cable (aka bi-centronics, these were commonly used with scanners) hooked into the parallel port on your PC? Not all parallel cables work, just IEEE1284.

Make sure that you are using an IEEE1284 compliant parallel cable. You should be able to find the words IEEE1284 printed on the length of the parallel cable. This is extremely important because if these words are not printed on the cable, then this cable is not in any way guaranteed to successfully communicate at the required high speed of the data transfer without having significant data loss and interference. - Make sure that your parallel port is configured for ECP mode in your computer's BIOS

When updating System Software on an imageRUNNER-iR device that requires an IEEE 1284 parallel printer cable, using a USB to Parallel Nethawk cable does not show as an available option in Service Support Tool even after the drivers of the Nethawk cable is properly installed.

There are certain laptops used in the field by technicians that may exhibit the problem. A workaround is to use a PCMCIA Cardbus to Parallel Port Adapter AND an IEEE1284 Parallel cable.

****NOTE: This is not a Canon USA Inc recommended solution. This workaround is provided as cost effective alternative to replacing a laptop and or reloading laptop operating system in the hope that it might correct the issue with Service Support Tool not making USB-Adp an available interface.

Which version SST are you using?
v4.11 or earlier will work well.
Are you selecting the right interface connection
            Which is Bi-centronics.

            One more ?
Does your laptop support a parallel connection
Or are you using a parallel to USB cable.

                Make sure u have v52.03 for 3300i
Minimum PC Requirements for Installation of the Service Support Tool are as follows: - Pentium 166 MHz or higher
                - 64 MB of RAM
                - 600 MB of hard disk space
                - Monitor resolution: SVGA (800x600)
                - 16 Bit Color
                - Printer port: Bi-centronics (IEEE 1284) ECP mode
                - Serial Port : RS-232C (D-sub 9pin connector)
                - Network Connection (Ethernet - RJ45)
                - USB port
                - CD-ROM Driver
                - Windows 98/NT4/2000/XP Operating Systems
(Windows 95 and Me are not supported)

Note: High-Speed Parallel Mode is not available under Windows NT, 2000 or XP even if supported by the hardware. Under these Operating Systems, the only Parallel Mode supported is Low-Speed.

Flashing a Canon device with system software or firmware via a parallel connection using the Service Support Tool or the PDL Downloader from Windows NT / 2000 / XP often results in connection failures, errors, or the entire process hanging.
Windows 95 / 98 doe have this problem.

Windows NT, 2000, and XP handle parallel port communication differently than Windows 95 and 98. Windows 95 and 98 support high speed parallel port communication with the Service Support Tool and PDL Downloader. Windows NT, 2000, and XP do not support high speed parallel port communication with these utilities.

                * Note - This is the case with Windows NT, 2000, and XP. High Speed will NOT be a selectable option (this is an OS limitation with the utilities). The screen will appear as follows:

                low..jpg
Due to this difference between the Operating Systems, it is recommended that the Service Support Tool and the PDL Downloader be used on Windows 95 / 98 when installing system software on (or flashing) a Canon device via a parallel connection. This way, you can use the High Speed mode in the utilities. You may get inconsistent results when trying to use Windows NT / 2000 / XP.
Using Low Speed mode from Windows NT / 2000 / XP will still work in most cases. Please see the recommendations below:
                Parallel Connection Recommendations:

                - Use a IEEE 1284 compliant parallel cable.
                - Set the Parallel Port Mode to ECP in the computer's BIOS settings.
                - Make sure that no installed printer on the PC is configured to use LPT1. Change the printer ports to something other than LPT1.
                - Try uninstalling any other 3rd party printer port monitors or printer applications/utilities from the PC.
                - Try disabling any security software that may be controlling access to LPT1.
                - If you are still experiencing connection problems from Windows NT / 2000 / XP, try using Windows 95 / 98 instead.

                * If you are responsible for installing system software on (or flashing) Canon devices in the field, it may be a good idea to configure your computer as a dual boot system, capable of booting up into Windows 95 / 98.
                Other Workarounds:
                1. Network Installation - If you are working with an imageRUNNER-iR Series (IP Platform) device utilizing the Service Support Tool, and you are not going to format the Hard Drive, you can install system software on (or flash) the device over a network connection (using TCP/IP). Using a network connection will work fine from Windows NT / 2000 / XP. When using this method, be sure to put the copier into Download Mode via Service Mode (hit COPIER, FUNCTION, SYSTEM, DOWNLOAD, and OK) (do NOT hold down 2 and 8 during boot up). If you want to format the Hard Drive, you will need to use a parallel connection.

                * Note - Newer Canon devices that do not have a parallel port can be flashed and can have their Hard Drives formatted via a network connection. Enter Download Mode by holding down 2 and 8 during boot up.

                2. USB to Parallel Interface Cable - There is a USB to Parallel Interface Cable (part # FY9-4154-000 old, FY9-4368-000 new) available. This cable will allow you to connect your laptop's USB port to the parallel port on the Canon device. The utilities (PDL Downloader and Service Support Tool) will be modified to utilize this cable, which will work with Windows 2000 / XP.

                * Update - PDL Downloader version 3.1.4.1 or higher it will support the USB to Parallel Interface Cable as described above.

                * Update - Service Support Tool version v3.21E to v4.23 will support the USB to Parallel Interface Cable as described above.

The USB-Parallel Cable is primarily used to format and install system software to a new Hard Disk Drive
[HDD] when replaced on any imageRUNNER machine with a parallel port.

                <Upgrading System Software>

Upgrading the System Software on any of the imageRUNNER machines with a parallel port can be
performed through service mode and the use of a network crossover cable.
[SERVICE MODE > COPIER > FUNCTION > SYSTEM > DOWNLOAD]
