imagePROGRAF W8400G "stuck" and will not go into service mode

    Hello,

I helped to get this printer up and running for a local print shop about 5 months ago. At the time it needed to have a new print head installed and that went without a hitch.

It has been working just fine since that time until just a few days ago. After switching from roll media to cut sheets and trying to go back again the printer has frozen up. It powers up, goes through the "Initializing. . ." step, you hear the standard "Click" sound, then the display goes to two lines:

    Canon W8400PG
    S/C ver. 02.15

and just sits there with its fan quietly humming away. None of the lights on the control panel come up and you cannot power the printer down by doing anything except unplugging it.

Called Canon tech support today and they had me try to get into service mode by holding down the "Paper Source" and the "Information" button, hitting the Power button, and releasing the two being held down once "Initializing. . ." shows on the display. When I do that, I get the following on the display:

    Canon W8400PG S
    S/C ver. 02.15

and then everything stops again: no indicator lights, no button response, can only power down by unplugging.

Is there anything else I should be doing/trying to get the printer to "reset" itself back to some functioning mode (preferably fully functioning). Canon was quoting a fee of $800 for a single out-of-warranty service call, which strikes me as utterly outrageous.

If this does require expertise/equipment that's highly esoteric, is there any repair/service technician/company in Virginia that I could call about this? I'd prefer to direct this client to someone she can trust, as she's running a very small business on a shoestring.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

    Brian

      teckat,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and for the link to Blue Ridge Copier. They are about 1.5 hours south of here, and probably don't cover Staunton, but having a starting point of a reputable shop to get a recommendation from is invaluable.
