How does the Canon MF8350Cdn determine it's out of toner?

I have the MF8350Cdn and am curious to know how it determines it's out of toner.

At first I thought it was just the smartchip on the cartridges and the printer recording how much toner it uses out of the cartridges, but when I first got the out of toner error I took the cartridge out and shook/knocked it with a metal flashlight to knock loose any stuck toner.

By doing this every 100 pages or so, I got another 1500 prints before any fading at all and then prints started to fade.

So how does it determine it's out of toner? Why does shaking/knocking the cartridge clear the out of toner error for a hundred pages or so? I understand knocking it frees stuck toner inside, but how is the printer detecting the difference? I thought maybe it detects when not enough toner makes it on the page, but I got the out of toner error 1500 pages before any fading.

    Sensors...

It knows ,It feels, Its ink belly is growling with starvation... Saying, feed me, replace the toner cartridge.

Keep knocking your toner cartridge with your metal flashlight your only looking for problems.

Not to worry! When you do that, the machine simply uses the toner on the machine's developer (if it uses it, I'm not quite familiar with Cannon machines). So while the developer has toner, you're all set - there's no need to shell out the dough for the Man!
