For a black and white that is a good value and very serviceable, I would recommend a member of the iR4570/3035 family. Any Canon tech should be able to work on one just fine and they're pretty stable. There are a handful of typical problems, but they're all widely known. iR2200/3300 is a pretty stable machine, too.

I bet he is looking for something other than Canon now.

I still say a box is a box.
There are some dogs, but that is the best challenge.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Remember the film projector to make photographic copies? (Shown on the photo, but had to tell what it is.)

Why did it need lots of moisture?

I have had Canon copiers years ago and got good service out of them.

What B&W models are generally trouble free. And have reasonably priced consumables. Large desktop or freestanding is fine.

We don't have a big budget as we are paid by the state to care for the mentally retarded.

                    Any advice would be appreciated.
You really need to tell us more before taking any recommendations.
                    1. Do you even need to copy or just print to it?
                    2. Do you scan docs to email or storage?
                    3. What volume are you doing?
                    4. Do you need things like double sided, stapling?
                    5. Do you need it to fax?

to create a working enviorment for unit/ to create some moisture & help dissipate some static buildup /
                      the machine ran hot/
printer heat exhaust fans & static elimination was crappy

newer machine now remove heat & static much better

heat & friction of moving parts do not mix well

teckat hit it on the head. Basically this thing was a large heater with a lot of static in it and in the winter time you would get all kinds of transfer issues.

I agree with the film projectors, but I would rather work on those than the bleeping CD changers on the NP-4080 series. what a mechanical nightmare!!!

The customer's requirements are very clear. Small budget, small office ( meaning probably LOW copy volume), stable & less troublesome machine, reasonably priced supplies. Preference is CANON as can be deduced from his testimony on previous canon service. I concur with with my fellow techs, go for a CANON IR 3300 or IR2800 for its stability and value for money performance. IR5000 is another good deal.
