CLC 5151 no black when printing heavy paper

    Hi there,

    I have a customer with a weird problem on a Canon CLC5151.
When printing plain paper thick 1 or thick 2 in the bypass or cassette the black component of the print is almost completely gone! The colors are ok.
When printing Thick paper and the setting is normal, the print is OK, no problems. This is not the way but for diagnose it works.
We replaced transfer belt AY, 2nd transfer roller, DC controllers AY 1 and 2 and HVT 1,2,3,4.!
It works for a few days but the problem is back again and the customer complaining again ;-(

    Does someone have any idea?

    Thanks in advance!

I have had this before and you are not going to like the fix to the issue. The drum drive assembly resolved this for us on two different units. Would work fine on plain paper settings, but you went to Heavy 1 or 2 and the black would drop out every time...
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.

How To Print Black On Heavy Paper

I had this problem for almost two years, then today, I thank God, I found the answer. Believe it or not, it is actually in the user manual! (See section 6-72 in the manual).

All you need to do is simply set the machine up manually for the paper type that you are using. If you do not do this then you will get washed out black print when using heavy paper.

        Solution:

        1) Press the Additional Functions key, and go to "System Settings"

        2) Go to "Paper Type Management Settings"

        3) Select from the list the paper that closely resembles the characteristic of the paper you are using. (I selected "Color", for I was printing on Xerox Colotech 250gsm)

        4) Press "Duplicate"

        5) Enter a name for the dupictate (I called the new setting "Color Heavy")

        6) Then select the "Edit" option for your new paper type.

        7) Press change for the characteristic you want to change. I would recommend that you just start changing the weight to match the paper you are feeding. Then press OK

        8) Do a test print through the Stack Bypass tray.

All should then be well. The CLC5151 is a far better machine than is credited. Like any capable professional device, it just needs patience and know-how as to how to use it and fine tune it. For us it helps to produce beautiful paper back books.

        I hope that this helps.

That setting is a waste of time/
it is just like the setting under >

          Common Settings

Paper type registration upon cassette auto selection -
copier, printer, box, receive/fax, other (Manual feed : On, *Off; Other pickup points : *On, Off)
Copy: consider the paper type: YES, *NO
Register paper type *Plain, recycled, color, heavy, transparency

U need to check the Black dev. drive stepping Motor
& the Drum Drive stepping Motor

no matter what changes u make in printer/copier settings for paper type (HEAVY) -
if that Drum Drive stepping motor does not adjust to paper type selected , u will experience a wash out

            Try It

The settings are not a waste of time, for they work for us.

I am not a Canon technician, but what works works, and our production goes on with rich black ink printed on 250gsm Xerox Colotech paper for our book covers with these settings.

Please try my recommendation for yourselves.

do you understand why only one color washes out ???

do u know how the drum drive & individual color dev.drive motors get their signals from when u select paper type ??

                  Hi Teckat, fellow technicians,

Replaced the motor as you mentioned in this thread, Worked ok. (lots of screws)
Ask the customer to keep an eye on his work and give me a call when things go wrong.

                  thanks again.

Well done, you shouldn't have any more problems with the black dropping out. I had the same issue 6 months back with the magenta. Replaced the dev drive motor and its been fine since.
