Sorry - this is a strange one. I will have the tech out next week again, but not sure if he can get this or not. We have a mix of 32-bit (read XP/Vista) machines & 64-bit (7) machines. The 64-bit machines print using the built-in driver, and prints look fine so far, everything normal. 32-bit machines, somewhere along the way, started having issues with printing certain letters/words in bold. So far have seen this in both Word & Powerpoint. Some files will print a few words + a couple letters in bold from a 32-bit machine. These are all shared files. If I open the file and print from another 32-bit machine, it will print the same few letters/words in bold. If I open the same doc in Windows 7 64 and print, it looks fine. This is not a file issue, there's no funny coding in the document. It prints fine from Windows 7, its only all 32-bit machines. Doesn't matter whether I use a PCL5 or PCL6 driver. Ideas? I'm tired of playing with it, and while I think our print repair folks are great, he didn't sound real optimistic. Thanks all!

Install and use the UFRII Print Driver. When printing in some applications with small fonts and/or line work, the PCL6 driver will BOLD these areas but the UFRII Driver will print them correctly.

Check this thread out.
To sum it up there are 2 suggestions.
1. Get the latest version of UFRII
2. Set the driver for "heavy" paper.

This looks like black overprint or CMYK black.
There is an option in the printer drivers:
Preferences > quality > details > grey compensation "on"
This solves problems relating to the copier not using pure black when it should!
It may help this problem too.Comment

I'm happy to hear it's working but that's a workaround and not a solution in my eyes. Changing the drivers may work but if it was me it would bug me that I could not fix the problem properly. Some customers need to use PCL for their applications so this would not be an adequate answer for them!

Thanks again for the input, Dave. Fortunately for me, my only customers are my staff here, and they are able to print everything they need using the UFRII driver. Since the driver will soon be completely off the network this solution works for me, as I have already spent too much time on something that will very soon no longer pose any issue. Gray Compensation is Off in the Windows 7 driver, and yet poses no issue for printing from those computers, so I prefer to use the driver approach, as the two OSes require different drivers anyway, and honestly now, anyone who has Windows XP is printing nothing but text anyway.Comment
