How to print on custom paper type with Canon machine?

I know I've said it before but these Canon machines are crap next to HPs and the problems never end.

I want to print on 8.5x5.5 paper, on an HP it's fully automatic and you have nothing at all to do.

On this canon so far I had to go program in the custom size on the machine itself, but now on the PC the custom paper size setting is still showing 8.5x11, so how do I get the printer to tell the computer it has the right paper size now?

I don't get how Canon are still in business which such horribly designed machines.

Why do you keep printing on these Canon crappy machines ?
When you have the honor of printing on the beautiful HP machines ?

A bird once told me that the crappy Canon used to produce most of the parts of the HP ....

Maybe, but at least HP gets the user experience right. I will be selling it and getting an HP in a while because it's just too infuriating dealing with how unnecessarily complex and un-user-friendly it is. It's not normal that I can't figure out how to print on a custom paper size, with HP's it's a breeze to do, now I'm starting to think it might not even be possible.

And needless to say, every firmware update I tried ends with an error and fails, but at least never rendered the machine useless.

It depends on what you're printing from. MS Word, Adobe PDF? It's best to make sure the paper size on the computer under printing preferences is the same as the document size in the program you're printing from...the worst is Adobe PDF...a lot of times it tries to override everything to 8.5x11.

This is true. They made many of the print engines. The older day printers were pretty awesome actually...have a lot that I keep rebuilding b/c they're reliable, good quality, and parts/supplies are getting cheaper.

Before jumping to Canon I used to be HP guy.
I can honestly tell you : HP is better ONLY in "driver point of view". Of course they are the creator of GL drivers known as HP-GL2.

For the rest Canon is way better.

                  Canon forever

Re: How to print on custom paper type with Canon machine?

OK I'm trying to print on 8.5x5.5 paper, I found how to set the custom paper size on the machine, but then on the PC it doesn't appear in the list of paper sizes and the custom option shows 8.5x11 and can't be changed. If I try to print anyway the printer says like "Error: Load STMT" or whatever.

I can print the document either from Word or Acrobat Reader, I have it in both formats.

How do I get the Canon driver to understand I want to print on 8.5x5.5?

BTW I use re manufactured HP cartridges in my Canon machine (they cost $150 instead of $700), I get 2-3 refills out of each before the quality degrades. I never have and never will buy a Canon cartridge, they cost more than the HPs (even comparing new genuine in each case) and the one and only difference is the brand name printed on the label.

                    Thanks

I can sense that you are very PROUD in choosing refills.
From how you express yourself it looks like you print yourself.
                        If so:

May I suggest to get a BIGGER MACHINE with LOWER COST/PAGE !!!

                          5.5 x 8.5 size paper = STMT

Oh wow, I hadn't realized that was a standard paper size.

I guess that will work I'll try it later, but what if I wanted to print on a truly custom size paper?

About getting a bigger machine I got this as an intro to laser printing as I had stuck with inkjet for the much lower cost per page. I really don't like having to to maintenance on this one every 2 000 prints VS every 50 000 prints with my inkjet. I'll look for a bigger HP brand one later.

But now my inkjet seems to be having problems after printing 250 000 pages, the cyan print head keeps dying after just 5000-10000 prints when they normally last a minimum of 50 000 prints. The last 4-5 cyan print heads died prematurely this way so I assume there might be something wrong with the printer. I use the inkjet far more than the laser due to the lower cost so I need to get this one working or replaced soon.

small inkjet printers were never desinged to run that many pages. Your tubes are probably filled up with all kinds of hardened ink and residue which is clogging your print heads.
